Relationships: Introduction Human sexuality is how people express themselves as sexual beings. Heterosexuality (attraction to opposite sex). Homosexuality (attraction to same sex). Sex Before Marriage: Age of consent is 16 because minimum age for marriage, maturity, preventing abuse, Christians and Muslims see sex as a gift from God which ideally should be controlled in Marriage or at very least a serious relationship. Sex expresses deep union/ love/ intimacy. Cannot be cheapened. Christians and Muslims against casual sex/ promiscuity/ one night stands as they cause harm/ unplanned pregnancy / STI / emotional abuse. Chasity: No sex. Contraception: Prevents pregnancy before/during/after Sex. Family planning. Stop STIs. Population control. Artificial – pill/condom/coil/spermicidal jelly/ sterilisation by operation. Some religious believers against because Sex should be for pro-creation. Some against coil / pill because egg already fertilised. Natural: Sex in woman’s menstrual cycle (rhythm method).Withdrawl (of penis before ejaculation) method. Family = social building block. Related by blood, marriage, adoption. Stable environment for children. Provides love/support / moral guidance/ role models. Nuclear (mother/father/children). Extended (grandparents). Single parent (25% of children). Step / Blended (divorced re-marry). Same sex (use IVF/ surrogates). Variety of families today. Marriage is a legal / social contract. Public commitment. Share life with people love. Companionship. Cohabitation is living together before/instead of marriage. Adultery (Sex Outside Marriage) is sex outside marriage when one or both partners married. Cohabitation: Living together in a sexual relationship before marriage. Some Christians/Muslims against cohabitation. Remarriage: Someone marries again whilst partner alive. Polygamy =more than one marriage at the same time. Historic practice for when marriage was about support / tribal agreements/ financial protection not relationships. Not legal in the UK and called bigamy. Same Sex Marriages legalised in 2014 in England, Scotland and Wales and 2015 in Ireland. Civil Partnerships for same sex couples legal 2004 giving legal equality. Divorce affects 42% of marriages. Through a court 1 year if marriage cannot be saved. Reasons – adultery, illness, people change, fall out of love, money, work, addiction, domestic violence, infertility, come out as gay. Adultery sex outside marriage when one partner married. Deception. Lack of trust.

Christian Points / Quotes On Relationships St. Paul: The Body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians). Sexual sins are against our body. Marriage reflects Jesus’ sacrifice for others (Ephesians 5) 10 Commandments (Exodus 20) say that parents should be respected. No adultery. Some Christians believe Sex is for pro-creation eg Catholic Church. Marriage is part of God’s plan from Creation. Lifelong, life giving, sacred . Blessed by God (a sacrament). There for us (companionship). Jesus: A man will leave his father / mother and become one flesh with his wife. Marriage vows or promises are made in Church before God – “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.” Jesus said anyone who looks at a woman with a lustful eye commit adultery (Matthew 5) . Jesus challenged people’s hypocrisy. Jesus says divorce acceptable in cases of adultery (Matthew 5). Some Bible passages against Divorce. Christians aim to offer prayer and counselling through services like Relate. Jesus forgave a woman who committed adultery but said she should not sin (John 8). Catholics can obtain annulment which says marriage not valid. See Social Justice topic for points on Same Sex Relationships and Sexism.

Muslim Points/ Quotes On relationships Muhammad and Muslim Doctor Avicenna knew and approved of contraception in marriage. “God wishes to lighten your burden” (Qur’an 4). But “no not kill your children for fear of poverty” (Qur’an 17). Muhammad said a man completes half his faith when he marries. Marriage is sacred and God-given. It is the most loved part of Islam next to God. People are clothes and a fortress for each other (Qur’an 2). Muslim parents can be consulted on a marriage partner (arranged marriage). Love marriage is when Muslims chose without parents permission. “Heaven is under the feet of mothers” (Muhammad) Muslims believe in looking after young and old. “Look after parents as they did us.” (Qur’an 17). “Children are fruit of the tree.” (Muhammad) “Great sign not to look after parents” (Qur’an 17). Muslims against adultery. “Evil path.” Some countries even punish by death with confession and 4 witnesses. Muslims can apply for Divorce to UK Muslim Council but Muslims must apply to UK Divorce Courts too. In Islam, there is a 3 month waiting period to check the woman is not pregnant in Islam. See Social Justice topic for points on Same Sex Relationships and Sexism.
