ITS Instructional Technology Service is an educational services unit that supports and helps lead the College toward excellence in academic and organizational learning. We provide programs, services, and consultation to the College Community in the areas of Instructional, Professional, and Organizational Development; Presentation Technologies; and Multimedia Production –We seek to serve all who are employed with the college Student support, grad & undergrad, is provided through Academic Computing

What Does ITS Provide Professional Training, Aid and Consultation Equipment for Self-Service –High Resolution Scanners –Graphic Workstations –CD burners –Graphic to 35mm Slide Conversion and Processing –Digital video capture/edit –High resolution print output –Large Format Printing http//: Poster Webpage providing Guidance, References and Links -- http//:

What You Need to Bring An investment of your and my time –an appointment w/ me for mins A B&W 8.5x11 proof of your poster –proofing should be done by someone other than the author A Research Account number for chargeback of consumables An Electronic File for print generation

File Formats Only PC files and media are supported –no ability to read Mac disks Media types: 3.5 Floppies, Zip 100 and 250MB, Jaz 2GB, CD, CDRW, DVD, Digital Film, Web & FTP Authoring Software: PowerPoint, Word, Pagemaker, InDesign, PDF, Graphic Images – legal donations accepted

File Formats Know your authoring software –Scale your page setup and images to the true printed output dimensions (e.g. 48x36 page, 7x9 image) This often requires image size and resolution adjustments –Stretching small, low to moderate resolution, images to fill a larger placeholder often degrades the image quality beyond acceptable levels –Resampling and resizing image properties should match the true output size and with a final resolution of at least 150dpi to provide good print quality Shortcutting adjusting image properties leads to disappointing results

File Formats –Adjust the margins of your page to include the 0.2 side and 0.7 header/footer unprintable borders of the paper by the output devices –Many programs have limits to their maximum page size setups –PowerPoint = 56 inches –PageMaker = 42 inches Limits can frequently be overcome by using the Print to Fit option in the printer driver properties, but be prepared for resolution distortions and this is recommended only for relatively small expansions

Proofing As a quality control measure authors need to perform proofing of successful file transport on the output workstation and the plotter. –Minor differences in software configurations between the authoring platform used and the output workstation appear regularly and may lead to symbol, font and equation reinterpretation by the output workstation and must be carefully screened for This issue is largely overcome by embedding these objects within the file to be brought for printing. This may be done with images as well; otherwise the image files must be included on the file media to be run from the output system

Proofing Needs to be done by a third party! –Looking for spelling and content errors –Viewed from an appropriate distance to spot arrangement issues Looking for compositional errors –Attracting attention –Has Flow and Direction –Not overcrowded –Achieves its purpose!

Production Issues Balances in time and effort –Planning –Composing –Editing –Output FOCUSEDHURRIEDGOT TO HAVE IT NOW Where do you want to spend your time for quality?

Costs $0.60/sq ft for inking $1.50/linear ft for high gloss paper Opportunity - there are seasons for poster printing that both you and your colleagues must manage. A rush for a single resource within the same timeframe must be planned for. First come, first served. Time and effort - yours & mine

Generation Limited onsite edits to maintain resource and time efficiencies Limited output runs (3) before being bumped from queue Output Devices –Epson Stylus Pro 5000, 13x44HiRes Printer –HP DesignJet 1055CM, 36 Plotter Materials - part of your design choice –Paper Types Plain: CAD Bond Coated: Color Bond High Gloss Photo Special – you provide

Generation Considerations –Time Final Edits Inking Drying Multiple components –Treatment Acrylic Lamination Mounting –Transport Fold Rolled Tubes/Cases Inkjet prints may run if they get wet!

Continued Impact Mini-Posters –B&W 8.5x11 handouts Let your presentation last longer with your audience and they can be shared with a wider group –Color miniatures For post presentation display of multiple past works and redistribution – good for promotional and archival activities –Covert to a reduced size electronic image for use in webpages and computerized presentations
