Hesiod’s Version Chapter 3 of Hamilton’s Mythology CHAOS NIGHT EREBUS (where death dwells) LOVE LIGHT Day GAEA (EARTH) OURANOS (HEAVENS)

GAEA’S & OURANOS’ CHILDREN: MONSTERS of ENORMOUS SIZE, INCREDIBLE STRENGTH, & DESTRUCTIVE POWERS (3) 100 HANDS & 50 HEADS (imprisoned by Ouranos) (3) CYCLOPS (had only 1 eye in their foreheads) TITANS CRONUS (he wounded Ouranos & set monsters free at Gaea’s request) OCEAN, TETHYS, HYPERION, RHEA, MNEMOSYNE, & THEMIS IAPETUS & his sons: ATLAS, PROMETHEUS, & EPIMETHEUS GIANTS, FURIES & Aphrodite (sprang from Ouranos’ blood when he’s wounded by Cronus) TYPHON (Gaea’s last child; more terrible than all the others)

CRONUS’ & RHEA’S CHILDREN: HESTIA HADES POSEIDON DEMETER HERA ZEUS* Cronus (Titan) now rules but eats all his children to keep from being overthrown by one of them Rhea saves Zeus from Cronus’ stomach—she gives him a rock to eat instead With Gaea’s help, adult Zeus forces Cronus to disgorge his children--- WAR FOLLOWS

WAR 1 FOR POWER: CRONUS & TITANS vs. ZEUS & HIS SIBLINGS TITANS IMPRISONED IN TARTARUS (LOWEST REGION OF UNDERWORLD) ATLAS CONDEMNED TO FOREVER HOLD THE UNIVERSE UPON HIS BACK Aided by PROMETHEUS and the MONSTERS (WHOM ZEUS RELEASED) ZEUS VICTORIOUS

WAR 2 FOR POWER: TYPHON vs. ZEUS LOSES & IS IMPRISONED IN TARTARUS WINS & TAKES CONTROL OF THUNDER AND LIGHTNING FROM TYPHON

WAR 3 FOR POWER: GIANTS VS. LOSES & ARE IMPRISONED IN TARTARUS ZEUS, HIS SIBLINGS, & HERCULES LOSES & ARE IMPRISONED IN TARTARUS WINS; ZEUS BECOMES THE NEXT RULER UNIVERSE “SAFE” NOW FOR THE COMING OF ANIMALS AND MAN
