Regional Advanced Manufacturing Sector Partnership Report

How Are we Doing?

Established a Goal “Close the Advanced Manufacturing Middle Skills Gap in the Finger Lake’s Region by December 31, 2023.” Grow the yearly supply of Adv. Mfg. middle skills work force from 261 To 610 Doesn’t account for increase demand from activities like Eastman Business Park AIM Photonics Center

Recommendations Develop Career Pathway Maps Create a Full Time Advanced Manufacturing Navigator Position Organize a Yearly Manufacturing Design Competition between teams of high school and middle school students Deploy eduFACTOR Licenses for all Middle Schools and High Schools in 9-county area

Create a Full Time Adv. Mfg. Navigator Position Our region already has many dedicated educators, industry leaders, government officials and organizations that support advanced manufacturing workforce development Annual Cost $100,000 However, in most cases these individuals support the sector’s workforce development on a part-time basis Their efforts are diluted because it represents a small part of their broader responsibility. No one person is responsible for achieving the goals we have outlined. Need for Focus We will be fighting Headwinds

Develop Career Pathway Maps One of the initial objectives for the initiative Created Career pathway maps for the following industry clusters are available as separate documents. Next Generation Manufacturing and Technology Optics, Photonics, and Imaging Agriculture and Food Production Final versions will be available first week of February Intended Application Describe the opportunities for career growth and advancement within a cluster Identify the credentials required for advancement Identify the educational resources within the region where you can obtain the credentials Target Audience Students, parents, educators and adults that have expressed interest in manufacturing careers

Deploy eduFACTOR Licenses for all Middle Schools and High Schools Achieving the goal of eliminating the middle skills gap will require a significant investment in marketing collateral to promote manufacturing as a career option. Edge Factor has prepared a proposal for licensing its educational content to all the middle and high schools in the region. Cost $130,000 per year Edge Factor content is licensed as a subscription service. It has been designed using streaming video content targeted at the internet generation. It is story-based content proven to engage middle and high school students and their families Target Audience Student’s Parents and Educators https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwDwpVjMMME. We need to control content and deliver positive messages regarding manufacturing

Organize a Yearly Manufacturing Design Competition between teams of high school and middle school students Partner with Edge Factor to help us manage a Reality Re-Design competition between teams of middle and high school students throughout the region. Edge Factor would provide project management resources to lead a Finger Lakes Region Reality Re-Design Competition. Annual Cost $150,000 Requires a minimum of 2 year subscription to eduFactor Industry Sponsor’s could propose real world challenges Teams of students would work with mentors to creatively solve the challenges. Supported with local PR campaigns to create a community BUZZ A competition for the “facetime” and “youtube” generation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A03IW9NNsTY

Summary Projected increase in annual middle-skills Adv. Mfg. Supply from 261 to 610 workers by 2023 Cumulative Cost $2.35 million Less than $400,000 per year Increase in Economic Value Cumulative $282 million by 2023 $131 million annually from 2023 on
