San Bernardino Alliance Geoscience Careers Strategy 2: Support students across the transitions between educational institutions and between education and career Alumni Local Professional Societies Ge University of California Riverside California State University San Bernardino Chaffey Community College For these joint activities, we are focusing on high school students who have already expressed an interest in the geoscience, such as those who participate in the Earth Science or CERT clubs at Etiwanda high school. Multiage Field Trips Joint Field Trip to San Andreas Fault Saturday, March 25, 2017, 8 am – 2 pm 25 high school students and their teachers 5 community college students and their professor 1 CSUSB master’s student 1 professional geology (CSUSB alumnus) ½ mile hike to fault from CSUSB Drone demonstration Lunch-time speakers on graduate school and on careers in geology Discussion of local geoscience issues relevant to our communities Tour of seismically retrofitted buildings at CSUSB Photo taken by drone Our first joint activity took place on a Saturday in March 2017. A group of 25 students from Etiwanda High school and 5 students from Chaffey College came to CSUSB with their geoscience faculty mentors. We took these students on a hike to the San Andreas fault and demonstrated the use of a drone for collecting aerial photography of faults and other geologic features. A CSUSB master’s student and a CSUSB alumnus who is now professional geologist were present and interacted with the students on one-on-one basis throughout the day. They each gave short talk over lunch, about graduate school and about careers in the geology.

Service Learning CSUSB undergraduate geology majors can earn service learning credit for leading or participating in geoscience outreach events for K-12 students Hikes from CSUSB to the San Andreas fault Presentations in classrooms CSUSB students attending field trips led by high school teachers as “resident experts” CSUSB undergraduate geology major Katie VonSydow (pictured here) has led several hikes to the San Andreas fault for K-12 groups this year and has given two presentations at a middle school.

Other Ideas Under Consideration Joint visits to dinner meetings of local professional organizations Joint service learning projects focused on local geoscience issues Formation of an inter-institutional Faculty Learning Community (“Map Your Hazards” at Etiwanda High School (EHS), Chaffey Community College and CSUSB. CSUSB Geology club up a booth at Etiwanda H.S. to provide information on geology programs and geoscience careers to EHS students CSUSB M.S. student presentations onpaleoseismic research to the Etiwanda H.S. Geology club and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) club So far these have not happened yet, but we’ve been talking about them …
