Unit 3: Rome Vocabulary – Part 1 Currency – System of Money Republic – Government where the people elect their representatives Punic – Latin for “Phoenician” Legion – 6,000 Roman soldiers Patrician – Rome’s upper/ruling class; wealthy landowners Triumvirate – A political alliance of three people Aqueduct – Engineering accomplishment through which water was moved throughout Rome for drinking, baths, crops, etc… Plebian – Rome’s lower class: artisans, shopkeepers, small farmers Latifundia – Large farming estate owned by patricians
