Inference Definitions: The act or process of reaching a conclusion about something from known facts or evidence. An inference is an idea or conclusion that's drawn from evidence and reasoning. An inference is an educated guess.

Archaeology and Inference Archaeologists use inference to build the archaeological reconstruction. For example, the pattern of artifacts spread across a certain landscape suggests that there was a system of trails that once was used to connect different activity areas. The inhabitants of this region discarded, for whatever reason, artifacts along these routes of connection. We can trace those routes through the artifact distribution. We infer that this represents the paths that people took to get from one place to another.

Gateway #4 Questions Archaeology is solely based upon the discover of artifacts and infer the purpose of those artifacts. Based upon the information gathered, explain what you can infer about the individuals locker? Provide a list of challenges that Archaeologists face in obtaining and inferring about objects left behind from past societies. Form some theories on how these challenges may be overcome. Our First Nations People of North America rely heavily on oral tradition. As an archaeologist, would oral accounts of information passed down from generation to generation be a good source for obtaining information about the past? Why or why not? Explain.
