Leadership Styles through the Years Traditional: Individual in charge maximizes performance - getting work done through people. Individual in charge initiates and manages change. Modern: Individual in charge facilitates new thinking. Postmodern: Leadership as pure influence emerges from multiple, unexpected sources; a distinct act, not an ongoing role; fluid After postmodern? How about Jesus’ leadership style? Is it also time-bound?

Shifts in Bukal's Understanding of Church Leadership Leader is Vision-shaped - Vision of church, the way one looks at church, shapes one's leadership style - First question is not "What kind of leaders do we need now?" But "What kind of church do we want to be?" - What kind of Church does God wants us to be? - For example: Bukal vision of a Participatory Church in the World: Participating in the life of God, in the life of One Another/Community, in the life of the World For Bukal, Leaders are those that facilitate the emergence of this kind of church SHIFT FROM PERSON TO PURPOSE

Shifts in Bukal's Understanding of Church Leadership 2) Responsibility of the Community, not One Person Leader to Leaders/Team of Leaders All are called to leadership, to be responsible for the growth of the group All share in the priestly, prophetic, kingly office of Christ There is a leader/leaders, but their role is to give space, build up, engage the leadership of ALL Good leader equals good leaders (not good followers) SHIFT FROM INDIVIDUAL TO COMMUNITY

Shifts in Bukal's Understanding of Church Leadership 3) Leader to Leadership SHIFT FROM STRUCTURE TO PROCESS Structure: position, roles, rights, rules, procedures Process: renewal, transformation, change - Leaders initiating, supporting change process First order of change is oneself: Be the change you want to happen Why do people resist change? Leaders facilitate a climate for change, so that people are open to change Give people the ownership of change For Jesus, change is a relationship, not a project Change, renewal in the church is our way of following God more faithfully in our world

Shifts in Bukal's Understanding of Church Leadership 4) Leadership as a Ministry SHIFT FROM POSITION TO RELATIONSHIP We used to understand leadership as a position of power But leadership in the church is a ministry Every ministry is meant to build up the body of Christ, the church Jesus led people not by giving rules, but by relating with people Following Jesus' leadership, we church leaders lead by relating to people in a way that builds them up, in a way that builds us up Leadership as friendship ("I call you friends." John 15:14-15) Friendship as a more relaxing, more upbuilding, more fulfilling way of leading

Shifts in Bukal's Understanding of Church Leadership 5) Leadership as Mission-led SHIFT FROM STATIC TO DYNAMIC Church is mission, exists for mission; All forms and ways of being church therefore responds to mission Leadership is mission-led, responds to mission in specific contexts If leadership is responsive to challenges of specific contexts, then leadership is dynamic and not static because contexts are always changing We do not change just because it is trendy to change, But because we are called to be faithful to the mission of Jesus in our time

E-LEADERSHIP: EMMAUS LEADERSHIP FOR A CHURCH ON WAY Church and society changing rapidly and we need a kind of leadership that responds to the challenges of such times. E-leadership is a leadership framework based on the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) – an Evoking, Engaging, Empowering and Evolving leadership. Early Christian communities in the Bible (Acts) called ‘people of the way’: they became known for a way of living that is different and noticeable. 'People of the way' It could also mean people on the move, a pilgrim people – one of the oldest biblical images of church. E-leadership is a way of leading – a leadership framework and praxis that is on the move, moving with our challenging times: a pilgrim leadership for a pilgrim church.

EVOKING LEADERSHIP : ON THE ROAD WITH QUESTIONS Leaving Jerusalem, taking distance, taking time out to look at the situation with discernment Bringing out the questions, the frustrations, the joys and hopes Listening to the voice of the stranger, the voice of the Other Facing the issues of the road Sensing the way: where to go, what signposts to note, what road turns to consider Leadership is led by the questions and the frustrations of our communities/context

ENGAGING LEADERSHIP: ENCOUNTERING JESUS AT HOME Inviting Jesus in our hearts, in our homes Feeling at home with Jesus, staying in his presence Dialoguing with Jesus - Jesus brings out the bigger picture; Attracts us to a higher purpose/vision Allowing the saving memories/dangerous memories to come alive Engaging absence: where is Jesus present in our time? “Stay with us, the day is almost over”: encountering Jesus in an act of mercy, mission service Leadership is led by the 'absent'/present Jesus

EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP: BACK TO JERUSALEM WITH HEARTS BURNING Back to Jerusalem: Responsive to the road they are taking Leadership changing face because of 'hearts burning' Change came from new experiences with Jesus Leadership based on influence (moral leadership): they have seen the Lord! Responsive to a higher purpose: evolutionary purpose (Vision of Jesus) Clearer identity, direction and focus (Mission of Jesus) Building up communities of leaders Leadership is led by hearts burning for Jesus’ vision-mission

EVOLVING LEADERSHIP: LEADERSHIP ON THE MOVE Replicating the experience Widening the circles of leadership Community-building: small communities that take up their leadership role by being vision-led and mission-driven Communities of ‘missionary disciples’ (Pope Francis) Leadership evolves – leadership recreates itself in new paradigms and praxis that responds to changing times through the active presence of Jesus' Spirit

EVOKE What is the profile of the community? What is happening to them? What questions do they ask “on the road”? What issues/concerns do they have? What makes them happy? Sad? What are their dreams? Are we listening to the “voice of the stranger”? As a leader, what are your questions? Frustrations and hopes?

ENGAGE Where is Jesus present in our place and time? How do we encounter Jesus as leaders? How do we facilitate a Jesus encounter in our church groups/communities? How can we more intensely listen to Jesus? How can we retrieve the dangerous and uncomfortable but saving memories of Jesus? What do we do so that the community could be engaged in discovering the Kingdom/Gospel values in their context? ENGAGE

EMPOWER How do we keep the fire of Jesus burning in our hearts? How can people catch and share the vision & mission of Jesus? What openings do we facilitate so that people are able to discover the “power” within them? How do we grow people into discovering their leadership capacities? How do we lead leaders? EMPOWER

What experiences do we facilitate so that they are able to replicate the Jesus encounter? How do we motivate them so that they themselves become change agents in their communities? How do they let others catch the vision as well? How do we develop communities of missionary disciples? EVOLVE
