Brachyspira hyodysenteriae 5th European Symposium on Porcine Health Management, Edinburgh, UK, 22-24 May 2013 A farrow-to-finish herd free from swine dysentery - 13 years after eradication Marie Sjölund1, Marie Sterning2, Märit Pringle1, Claes Fellström2 1National Veterinary Institute, SVA; 2Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU; Uppsala, Sweden Objective The aim was to evaluate an eradication program for swine dysentery perfomed 13 years previously in a farrow-to-finish herd Introduction of swine dysentery by purchase of growers Brachyspira hyodysenteriae demonstrated in 13/20 (57%) samples Hemorrhagic diarrhea in fatteners & gilts. Lawsonia intracellularis demonstrated Increased prevalence of hemorrhagic diarrhea in fatteners Brachyspira group III demonstrated in 7/20 samples. Brachyspira hyodysenteriae NOT demonstrated Eradication program June-October 1999 2013 1995 1997 2011 1999 2001 2003 2005 2007 2009 Regular samplings for Brachyspira spp. Conversion from specialized fattening production to a farrow-to-finish herd Total # samples Brachyspira hyodysenteriae Brachyspira pilosicoli Other Brachyspira spp. 210 5 97 Hemorrhagic diarrhea in sows & growers Eradication program Sale of surplus growers (treated with 80 ppm tiamulin for 6 days) Sows treated with an injection of tiamulin (10 mg/kg) followed by water medication with 120 ppm tiamulin for 11 days Cleaning & disinfection - Removal of slats, manure pits emptied - Manure removed from yard surfaces - Pressure-wash, drying & disinfection with glutaraldehyde Sows moved to cleaned and disinfected units - Sows cleaned & disinfected - 2nd tiamulin injection (10 mg/kg) on allocation - Water medication continued for 3 days after allocation Enforced rodent control Dogs & cats water medicated with tiamulin Conclusions The eradication program for swine dysentery proved to be successful but complete eradication of other Brachyspira spp. was not achieved. Neither was Lawsonia intracellularis eradicated although tiamulin is effective for treating proliferative enteropathy.
