Deaf-Blindness Deaf-Blindness is a condition of a combined vision and hearing loss, requiring specific instructional strategies that address the presence of both sensory impairments. The child could have varying degrees of hearing and vision loss. It is the combination of this loss that has a profound impact on how the child will interact and learn in his or her environment. The important thing to remember is that you should focus on both the hearing and vision aspect of the sensory losses.

Vision Loss I am Legally Blind because of a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa also known as RP. My left eye is better than my right eye. I have lower and side field losses. I have night blindness.

Hearing loss I have a severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss bilaterally. The word sensorineural means (nerve damage in the inner ear). This means that I have a permanent hearing loss. The word bilateral means both ears.

Usher Syndrome There are three types of Usher Syndrome Ushers I Ushers II Ushers III I have Ushers Syndrome II

What is Usher Syndrome II? Ushers Syndrome II is a Genetic disorder Ushers II is characterized by Progressive Vision loss Progressive Hearing loss Trouble with balance

Deaf-blind in school Teachers will need to… Speak clearly and slowly during instruction Make sure that I have access to materials in class before they are used during instruction JUST ASK! Self-Advocacy Self-advocacy means standing up for yourself in a positive way and giving yourself the opportunity to succeed and be able to explain your rights and responsibilties in life. Once a person has learned how to be a self-advocate then the individual can assist others to do so as well.

Any questions?
