Essential Questions What is a primary and secondary source and what is the difference between them? What are some advantages and disadvantages of primary and secondary sources?

Primary Source Secondary Source Lesson Vocabulary Primary Source Secondary Source

Lesson Vocabulary Primary Source- a record made by people who saw or took part in an event. Secondary Source- a record of an event written by someone that was not there at the actual time an event occurred.

Primary Sources The author/artist of the source was there when the event took place. The source was made when the event took place. Examples: letters, diaries, interviews, drawings Their drawings or photographs may show the events that they saw.

Secondary Sources The author/artist of the source was NOT there when the event took place. The source was made after the event took place. Examples: textbooks, encyclopedias, magazine articles, newspaper articles, and online sources

Primary-Secondary Sources 1) Source A-primary source (It is a letter from Ghandi himself) Source B- secondary source (newspaper article) 2) Source A: names, dates, places, reasons for going on the march, and writer’s opinion Source B: Names, dates, places, Britain’s response, India’s response, and writer’s opinion

Primary/Secondary Sources 3) Source A shows Mohandes Ghandi’s feelings and idea on the matter, but not Lord Irwin’s Source B presents more of what’s happening in Britain and India but gives a one-sided view (Britain’s)
