First Day Jitters

OBJECTIVES TODAY WE WILL…. Analyze the story structure Use academic language; story structure, character, setting, and plot Identify character, setting, and plot

Vocabulary Review Downstairs Nervous Fumbled Chuckled Nonsense Compound word meaning “down the stairs.” Nervous Afraid or worried Fumbled Done in a clumsy way Chuckled Laugh quietly Nonsense Silly or untrue idea or thought

Strategy: Analyze Story Structure Authors organize a story so there are characters, setting, and a plot with a beginning, middle, and end By seeing how these parts of a story fit together, you can understand what happens and why it happens

Skill: Character, Setting, and Plot Stories have characters which are people in the story Their actions move the story along Setting When and where the story takes place Plot The events in a story. Has a beginning, middle, and end

PREVIEW & PREDICT When I say “Go”, take 1 minute to preview the illustrations. Ask yourself: What do you think the title of the story means? Do you think this story will be funny? On your index card, write your predictions. After we listen to the selection, we will see if your questions were answered.

Let’s Check our Predictions! Share with your criss-cross/shoulder partner your questions. Were they answered? Did you find clues that gave you information about why Sarah did not want to go to school? TOMORROW WE WILL… Use our “Story Map” to answer the Comprehension Check on page 33.
