Standard #3 Learning Environments The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. Name of Artifact: School Uniforms Date: November 13, 2014th Course: EDUC101 Description: This is a power point presentation to discuss school uniforms. We will be talking about the history of school uniforms and also the pro and con sides of uniforms. Rationale: This power point relates to standard #3 because the use of school uniforms can create an equal school environment for all students, and uniforms promote positive social interaction.

Intro!!!

School Uniforms History!!! First recorded school uniforms First US public schools to institute uniforms President Clinton’s view on school uniforms Religious exemptions ("School uniforms: Pro," 2014)

School Uniforms History!!! Statistics of school uniform use: The number of public schools requiring school uniforms went from 13% in the 2003-2004 school year to 19% in the 2011-2012 school year. 20% of public elementary schools and 12% of secondary schools required school uniforms in the 2011-2012 school year. Mandatory uniforms are used more in “high poverty” schools (where 76% of students were able to get reduced-cost or free lunch” than in “low poverty” schools Schools with highest use of uniforms: Philadelphia (100% of schools), New Orleans (95%), Cleveland (85%), Chicago (80%), Boston (65%), and Miami (60%).

Uniform Pro’s School uniforms may deter crime Increase student safety Keep students focused on education No worries about clothes ("School uniforms: Pro," 2014)

Uniform Pro’s Create unity among students Reduce peer pressure and bullying Students can express their individuality in school uniforms By introducing variations and adding accessories ("School uniforms: Pro," 2014)

Uniform Con’s Uniforms suppress self expression Constitution right (Johnston, 2009) School learning environment This is the time to learn! (Bailey, 2014)

Uniform Con’s Unconformity Ineffectiveness Rebellious acts (School Uniforms, 2014) Lack of educational attainment (Tanner, 2009) Ineffectiveness No effects unless more is done (School Uniforms, 2014) & (Brunsma, 2014)

Conclusions Based in the facts and info from EDUC 101 School uniforms part of history Private and public schools School uniforms & community classrooms (Koch, 2014, pg. 166). School uniforms idea impact education

Time for debate! To what level should uniforms be enforced in schools? Dress code vs uniforms Can uniforms really benefit student and teachers, in what ways? Do you think school uniforms are used to promote unity or to stifle individuality?
