Warm-Up On a piece of paper, write down: You have 3 minutes! Go! Timer Two truths and a lie about: A place to which you have traveled. A language or languages that you speak. A favorite pastime of yours. You have 3 minutes! Go! Timer

Introductions Now, share what you wrote down with a partner (someone sitting next to you), and they will share with you. Make sure to pay attention to what they say! Try to identify which fact that your partner told you is the lie. Ok…now introduce your partner to the class, using what you have learned about them. Also, give us your opinon on what you think their lie is!  You were put into partners for this activity because we will be doing a lot of partner and group work in this class. You cannot learn a language if you never speak it, or discuss it with anyone! Sometimes you will be able to pick with whom you work, and sometimes you will not.

Me! Moi! Mí! 私に! As many of you know, I am Mrs. Lowe, the Spanish teacher here at Pennington. Now, I also teach this class and I am super excited! My Warm-up: I enjoy yoga, walking and reading. Besides the U.S.A. I have been in Peru. I have been on a couple cruises to Cozumel in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Saint Thomas and Jamaica. I speak English, Spanish, some Italian and I understand some Portuguese. I am also learning Latin, French, Japanese and Italian through this class. What is my lie ? Why do you think learning a second, or multiple language is important?

Reflection Questions With your group members that I have assigned, discuss and reflect on the video you have just seen. You will be given six questions. With your group members answer those questions in complete sentences. Once you have completed the questions, make sure all group member’s names are on the copy that you will turn in to your class’ box.

Warm-up How would you define the word “Polyglot” to someone who was unfamiliar with its meaning? Finish the following sentence in your own words: “When you communicate with someone, you…” Can you identify the four ways that humans communicate?

Written Communication Written communication uses symbols that represent spoken language. Spoken language has existed for thousands (maybe even millions!) of years before written language was developed. Written language encompasses a variety of writing systems: Alphabet - Pictograph/Pictogram - Ideograph/Ideogram -

Examples: which is which? Your turn! Communicate something written to your partner.

Written Communication Now, how would you take that same equation and write it out using the English alphabet? 6 x 2 = 12 ÷ 3 = 4 + 4 = 8 – 2 = 6 Practice your drawing skills! Use the squares provided to draw: A pictograph/pictogram An ideograph/ideogram Remember, the two are not one and the same! Will your partner be able to understand the message you are trying to communicate?

Verbal Communication Verbal communication is spoken language, human speech, or sounds. Produced by human speech organs and perceived by the ears Your turn! Communicate something verbally to your partner.

Verbal Communication All of you take Math here at BRMS, and solve various equations using numbers and symbols. Each equation expresses an idea that we learn to understand over time. Non-Verbal Communication A transfer of meaning without using spoken language. Your turn! Communicate something non-verbally to your partner.

Body language Body language is a type of non-verbal communication that can be very useful to help you get your point across when learning a new language. Watch each of the following video… with no sound! Can you figure out what it is that’s taking place?

What’s happening?

Visual Communication Visual Communication conveys a message, information, or ideas through sight. These messages can be read or looked at, and include symbols, maps, graphs, drawings, and other types of images and text. Your Turn! Communicate something visually to your partner.

Signs and Symbols Forms of visual communication can be helpful as you learn to understand a new language. Can you guess the meaning of the following signs?

A Failure to Communicate As you watch the following video, reflect on the following questions using the knowledge you have gained about communication: Each girl in the video has a quality about them that makes it difficult for them to communicate. What are they? What different ways do the girls in the video try and use to communicate with one another? Do the two girls finally understand each other? Last but not least… Not only do we communicate in a variety of different ways, but we also adapt our communication style depending on who we are communicating with! This week, reflect on how you communicate differently with the people in your life. How does your communication style change when you are with: Your parents? Your teachers? Your friends? Your siblings?
