Myth busting Higher Education

Studing at university is the only way to get a degree. “ “

Fact You can study at an increasing range of places and get a degree. Not only at universities but also at university centres in colleges and even studying for a degree while in a job.

“ It’s not for people like me. “

Fact All kinds of people go onto Higher Education – 86% of students come from state schools. Higher Education is open to everyone with ability, whatever their background.

I can’t afford to study Higher Education. “ “

Fact You will never have to pay for tuition fees upfront. You can borrow the money you need to live from the government. You only pay it back when you starting earning more than £21,000 per year.

“ It’s just like school. “

Fact University isn’t at all like school! Though you still have to study, you have more control over what and how you study. You will also have the opportunity to expand you horizons: travel; joining new clubs; meeting people from different backgrounds; and becoming more independent.

Higher Education is for people who are good at academic courses not vocational courses. “ “

Fact Courses can be practical, theory-based or creative – or all of these.

I can only apply to study in one place. “ “

Fact You can make between one and five choices.

I’ll have to pay debts back straight after graduating. “ “

Fact You only have to pay back at a rate of 9% on anything you earn over £21,000, regardless of how much you borrow. The average graduate salary ranges from £18,000 (nothing to pay) to £24,000 (£5.19 a week to repay).

“ I have to live away from home. “

Fact Although living in halls of residence is a good way to become immersed in student life, it isn’t the only option. You could live at home and commute to university or study online.

There’s no point studying Higher Education, you can earn just as much by working. “ “

Fact The wage difference between graduates and school-leavers is about 35%*. *According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies

I won’t be able to get a mortgage (to buy a house) because of my student debt. “ “

Fact The Council of Mortgage Lenders says a student loan is very unlikely to impact on your ability to get a mortgage.

Higher Education courses last three years. “ “

Fact You can study for as little as a year and still get a meaningful qualification. Many courses are also available on a part-time or flexible study basis.
