How Ranchers Identify Cattle Do you think it would be difficult to tell this cow each time you How Ranchers Identify Cattle

Ranchers need to be able to identify one animal from another for many reasons: age, health, breeding purposes and to be able to pass this information on when they are sold.

The simplest way to identify one animal from another is by using ear tags. These are not required by law and each rancher determines the system which will be used. We identify our calves each year in the order they are born.

A new law has been passed which requires that animals be given a permanent number that goes with the animal each time it moves. The first numbers of this long number indicates the country and state. These are electronic tags can be read with a wand and send the number to your computer.

Sometimes it’s easy to tell one ranches cattle from its neighbors.

But how does a rancher tell his cattle from another’s if they’re of the same breed?

Let’s take a test to see if you can identify these items represented by these images. (All sports logos)
