5TH GRADE SCIENCE CURRICULUM Presented by Professors: Kingston Chen, Kevin Gu, Jasmine Li, Michelle Liu, Larissa Sun

Stars & Solar System

Brief look at our solar system! One Sun Eight Planets About 146 Moons Lot of Stars & Comets

Gravity Gravity is the thing that keeps our feet on the floor! It is the physical force and pull between objects -on Earth, we have enough gravity to keep us on the ground but in space, there isn’t a lot of gravity so people & objects just float around tell kids that how much we weigh is how much gravitational force we have on the Earth but in space, no matter how heavy you are, you are going to float around

How Does the Earth Move? The Earth moves in 2 different ways : Orbit and Rotation Have kids stand up and rotate and orbit around each other like planets so they can understand the way they move.

Earth circles around the Sun Orbit: Path that the Earth takes around the sun Revolution: A full orbit of the Earth around the sun Make sure kids understand that this is sort of like a double rotation where something is rotating while orbiting around something else

Earth circles around itself Rotation is when Earth circles around its axis Axis: The center line that earth rotates around The south and north pole is where the axis starts and ends

Milky Way All of our planets, stars, moons, and the Sun are in the Milky Way. The Milky Way is a galaxy that contains our whole solar system. tell kids that there are many different galaxies and that the milky way is just one out of the millions that exist in our unive

Other Planets Besides Earth? Planet: large bodies that revolve around the sun in the solar system There are 7 other planets besides Earth and they all orbit around the sun! ask students if they can guess which planet is closest & furthest from the sun (mercury is closest and pluto is the furthest)

Moons -Moons are natural satellites that revolve around planets -Planets can have multiple moons -Our moon reflects the light that comes from the sun which is why it lights up! reiterate that moons revolve around planets and that planets revolve around the sun

Stars -Stars are naturally bright balls of gas that are in the milky way -Specific patterns and designs of stars are called constellations ask students if they can name the famous constellation in the picture above

Solar System Song http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/videos/space/solarsystemsong.html have a fun game afterwards and if anyone can name all the planets in order, they get a prize
