Cotton Cotton had long been big business in Texas. Spanish missionaries and early Texas settlers had planted cotton. By 1852, Texas was a leading cotton producer. People begin migrating into Texas and moving into the Texas Plains to plant cotton. Soon after, Texas was the leading cotton producing state.
