Our Solar System

The Sun The sun is a star at the center of the solar system. The surface temp of the sun is 9,941⁰F. It is 2,715,395 million miles around. It takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to be seen on earth after it leaves the sun. It is very dangerous to look at the sun without protective glasses on bright days.

Mercury Mercury is the closest planet to the sun at 36 million miles away. Its orbit is 88 days around the sun. It takes 59 days to complete from day to night. On the sunny side of the planet it is 750⁰F and on the dark side it is -328⁰F. It is 3,1000 miles around. Mercury is 57 million miles from Earth. It has no moons.

Venus Venus is the 2nd closest planet to the sun at 67 million miles away. It is the brightest planet in the solar system. Its orbit around the sun is 225 days. It is 7,520 miles around. It is 25 million miles from Earth. It takes 116 days 18 mins to complete a full day. It is the hottest planet at 860⁰F. It has no moons

Earth Earth is the 3rd closest planet to the sun at 93 million miles. It is the only planet that has liquid water and life. It tilts on its axis slightly to give seasons. It is 7,928 miles around. It takes 365 days to orbit the sun. It takes 24 hours to complete one day. It has one moon.

Earth’s Moon It is the 5th largest moon in the solar system. It is 238,885 miles from Earth. It orbits the Earth every 27.3 days. It has 8 phases: new, waning crescent, third quarter, waning gibbous, full, waxing gibbous, first quarter, waxing crescent. It is 224.6⁰F during the day and -243.4⁰F at night.

Mars Mars is the 4th closest planet to the sun at 141.6 million miles away. It takes it 685 days to orbit around the sun. It takes 24 hours 39 minutes to complete a day. Its high in the summer is 23⁰F and in the winter its -125⁰F. Mars is 4,212 miles around. It is 249 million miles away from Earth. It has 2 moons.

Jupiter Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun at 483 million miles away. It is the larges planet. It takes 4,343.50 days to orbit the sun. it takes 9.84 hours to complete one day. Jupiter is 88,700 miles around. It is 365 million miles at the closest and 601 million miles at its farthest from Earth. It has 64 moons.

Saturn Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun at 886 million miles away. It is the 2nd largest planet. It has 3 rings around it. It is 75,098 miles around. It takes 29.5 years to orbit the sun. It takes 10 hours to complete a day. Saturn is 746 million miles from Earth. It has 18 moons.

Uranus Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun at 1782 million miles away. It has 13 rings around it. It takes 84 years to complete its orbit around the sun. It takes 17.9 hours to complete a day. Uranus is 29,297 miles around. It is 1.7 billion miles at its closest and 1.89 billion miles at its farthest from Earth. It has 27 moons.

Neptune Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun at 2.795 billion miles away. It is the 3rd largest planet. It is 29,297 miles around. It takes 165 Earth years to complete its orbit around the sun. It takes 19 hours to complete a day. Neptune is 2700 million miles from Earth. It has 13 moons.

Pluto It is the 9th planet from the sun. Its distance from the sun various due to it doesn’t have a regular orbiting path. It is 1,400 miles around. It takes 248.5 years to complete its orbit around the sun. It is takes it 6.5 days to make a complete turn on its axis. It is 2.66 billion miles from Earth. It has 5 moons.
