Hussam Khartabil GenIV Information Exchange Meeting April 29-30, 2003 CANDU X Hussam Khartabil GenIV Information Exchange Meeting April 29-30, 2003

CANDU X Main Safety Feature Separation between moderator and coolant. Replace pumped moderator cooling loop with passive loop. Passive loop can be used under normal and accident conditions. Key projects: High Efficiency Channel (HEC) with internal insulation. Flashing-driven moderator cooling loop. - Talk about “seamless” development path and spin-offs into existing designs.

High Efficiency Channel (HEC) is key technology for CANDU X. Internal insulation (eliminates CT and annulus gas system). Allows the use of passive moderator cooling under normal and upset conditions. Potential “walk-away” safety when combined with Passive moderator cooling. Pressure Tube Use to emphasize the urgency to develop an advanced fuel channel. Liner Porous Insulator

Fuel channel ceramic insulator tests ongoing at SC conditions. Feasibility study to add natural circulation loop completed. Facility static at present. Adding flow capabilities is necessary for 1) more realistic conditions, 2) of interest to GenIV and would make it possible for CX to claim past expenditures as part of our GenIV collaboration.

Demo from past tests. The new loop is smaller and will allow the study of scaling criteria (need at least two different scales). The new loop will also be used to study other effects not studied in previous loop (e.g., heat exchanger orientation, secondary passive loop connected to PEWS tank).

Test loop designed and materials purchased. Will be used to study scaling and allow the design of a prototype loop for CX.

Other Projects Heat transfer tests using CO2 at SC conditions. Engineering & economics. Fuel Handling. Fuel bundle design/fuel cycles. Materials.
