Human Body Systems
Human Body Systems Skeletal System: consists of 206 bones gives the body shape, support, and protection works with the muscular system to allow movement produces RBC’s, WBC’s, and platelets
Muscular System: - consists of over 600 muscles (skeletal, smooth, & cardiac) works with the skeletal system to allow movement moves blood through the blood vessels, causes heart to contract, and moves food through the digestive tract
Circulatory System: - also known as the cardiovascular system - consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood - circulates blood throughout the body, as well as, nutrients, waste and gases; hemoglobin carries O2 to body cells
Respiratory System: - consists of the nasal cavity, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, lungs, and diaphragm - allows for respiration (breathing) to occur; controls gas exchange between blood and lungs
Digestive System: - consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus other organs that help produce and store enzymes that aide in digestion are the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas - digests or breaks down food; absorbs nutrients, removes waste, maintains water and chemical balance
Excretory System: - also known as the urinary system - consists of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra removes nitrogenous wastes from blood in the form of urine
Nervous System: -brain, nerves, spinal cord -carries messages in the form of nerve impulses throughout the body neuron
Central vs. Peripheral Nervous System Central Peripheral brain motor neurons spinal cord sensory neurons
Endocrine System: - consists of the pituitary, adrenal, thymus, thyroid, and parathyroid glands - also part of this system is the pancreas, ovaries, and testes - this system produces hormones, helps regulate body temperature, & maintains homeostasis
Lymphatic System: consists of lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels, as well as, spleen, thymus, tonsils, appendix and bone marrow - filters the blood, tissue fluid, and maintains fluid balance throughout the body
Reproductive System: Female: consists of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina Male: consists of the prostate gland, testes, and penis -produces gametes for reproduction
includes bone marrow, lymph nodes, lymphocytes, WBC’s, and antibodies Immune System: includes bone marrow, lymph nodes, lymphocytes, WBC’s, and antibodies defends body against infectious agents
Integumentary System: includes skin, hair, nails, sweat glands serves as a protective barrier for the body; prevents dehydration, and regulates body temperature
