Welkom! Did you sign the attendance sheet? TPM = Technology, Policy and Management.
Is your mobile switched off/mute? Introduction Dutch language course Elementary 1 Jeanet Annema TU Delft/ITAV Is your mobile switched off/mute? Dia 2 Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman, a very warm welcome to you all. Welcome to the introduction of the Dutch language course, Elementary 1. My name is Jeanet Annema. I am one of the teachers Dutch as a second language of the institute of Academic Skills and Languages of the Department TPM = Technical Policy and Management of the TU Delft. This is my colleague XXX. Next week you are starting a course. It is important to be prepared properly for it.
This introduction lesson Language learning and the Delft Method How to prepare your classes Course organisation Enrolment procedure Aim of today’s introduction is telling you what you need to know to start properly. During this introduction I will give you some information about: - Language learning and the Delft Method - How to prepare your classes - Course organisation Enrolment procedure At the end of this introduction there is time for your questions.
24.000.000 How many people speak Dutch? + 300?? Dia 4 From next week onwards, you are going to learn Dutch. This in not the most spoken language in the world. How many people do speak Dutch? At this moment: over 17 millions of people in The Netherlands, all over the world 24 million. And after the next quarter: some 300 people more!
1. Language Learning and The ‘Delft Method’ Learning a new language via the Delft Method may be different from the way you’ve learned languages till now. How have you been learning English at school? What did you do in class?
Natural Unconventional Speedy … Dia 6 In Delft we teach languages differently, trying to imitate the natural way of language learning. Perhaps the Delft method is unconventional. Anyway it is more speedy. During your 7 week course you’ll learn over 150 words per week. That’s about 1000 words in only 7 weeks. How is this possible?
Input, that’s what you need! Focus on skills instead of conscious knowledge Dia 7 During the lessons we are focusing more on skills than on knowledge. What did you do as a child while learning to understand and use your language? Listening! What you need to learn a new language is input. A lot of input. And one day you started talking back. Of course with mistakes, but that wasn’t a problem at all. We try to follow that way of language learning a little bit. Learning the new language is a lot of work. Unfortunately we are not able to put a chip in your brain with the new language. So it will cost you time and effort. Input, that’s what you need!
Building blocks versus puzzles Learning a language is not difficult but it is a lot of work. What you need is input. What sort of input do you need? No puzzle blocks that can only fit one way, but what you need are building bricks, like Légo blocks. What are the most important building blocks for building a language? Words Words Words!

Classes: focus on skills - learning by doing The classes are mainly devoted to doing, to practicing with the new language. So: learning by doing. During the lessons we’ ll have conversation with each other. In Dutch only from day 1. How is that possible? This is possible after your preparation at home! How to prepare your classes?

Aim 1. understand a spoken text without help >> Learn the texts (2-3 hours per text!) 2. ability to speak about the text in a conversation >> Prepare for speaking during the classroom conversation The total course load is 8-10 hours a week! The classes are devoted to practicing by using the language. This is only possible after your preparation at home! What is the aim for the homework and the classes? Be aware of the selfstudy aim: you have to be able to understand the audio of the texts without any help. You will need 2-3 hours to achieve this study aim. Understanding a text without any help is the last step in the study program. Before there are several study steps with help. The second aim of your preparation at home is your ability to speak. During the lesson we are going to talk about topics of the text. You can practice this at home . Try to speak with an imaginary friend. After your preparation at home you’ll be able to join the conversation in class and also to do the computer test that you have to take at each course day (before or after each lesson). This test is a dictation; you listen to sentences from the text. And you type what you’ve just heard. In summary: the selfstudy aim.
Learning step by step Help Step 1 Listening With pauses With text Translations Repeating out loud Step 2 Listening With text Step 3 Listening With pauses + Repeating out loud Step 4 Listening Step 5 + 6 Exercises Test Ga naar: www.delftsemethode.nl Klik op: Demo’s > Nederlands voor Buitenlanders (0>A2) www.delftsemethode.nl >> demo GB erbij en de stappen doornemen. Learning step by step How are you going to learn the texts and practice your speaking skills at home? The most efficient way is studying by following the steps in the online study program or in the App, or on the cd-rom. You are learning step by step with gradually less help. Step 1: with lots of help Step 2 gradually less help: without pauses Step 3 without text Step 4 without text & without pauses Step 5 dictation Step 6 exercise
Step 1 Step 2 listening reading repeating out loud sentence by sentence translation Step 2 as Step 1, but without pauses Stap 1 Klik nog een keer luister Luister: hoe wordt het gezegd, de uitspraak is immers belangrijk! Kijk: kleine woorden die je niet goed hoort, maar die er wel zijn Hoe zit de zin in elkaar Ongeveer 16 regels, ½ uur Stap 2 Is zonder pauzes: begrijp je nog steeds wat er gezegd wordt? Leer door te lezen, te luisteren en te begrijpen. Hoe heb je je eigen moedertaal geleerd? Door te luisteren! Veel input is nodig om een taal te leren.
Step 3 Step 4 Listening without reading sentence by sentence repeating out loud 5, 6, 7, … times until you understand and can repeat everything easily Step 4 as step 3, but without pauses
Step 5: test After having studied the text! Did I study the text properly? Listen > write 80% correct less 80% > go back to step 1 -3 Luister en typ x/x woorden correct Minder dan 80% is een stap terug
Step 6: exercise After having studied the text! Gap fill exercise + feedback De gaten test doe je pas nadat je de tekst goed kent! Denk aan een gesprek in een drukke straat: ook al mis je een paar woorden, je kunt toch begrijpen wat iemand zegt. > kennis van de taal Wanneer je goed gestudeerd hebt, ben je goed voorbereid voor de les. Geen reden voor angst. Nu ben je klaar om naar de les te gaan, maar bedenk: de voorbereiding van een tekst kost je 2 tot 3 uur!
Learning step by step Help Step 1 Listening With pauses Reading Translations Step 2 Listening Reading Translations Step 3 Listening With pauses + repeating out loud Step 4 Listening Step 5 + 6 Exercises Test in summary: the study steps. Make sure that you follow all the steps one by one. Only continue to the next step when the first step is easy. If a step is difficult, go back to the former step. This process will cost you about 3 hours per text.
Preparing for the conversation After each text: Questions (vragen) Speaking (spreken) Speaking about the text Preparation for the conversation: After you’ve learned the texts properly, you’ll be able to prepare for the conversation lessons. After each text in your book you’ll find conversation questions. Use these questions to prepare yourself for the conversation in class. Try to speak with yourself or an imaginary friend. Maybe you have a room mate to practice with? Ask yourself: what would I ask if I were the teacher?
Some good advice Do not fill in the gaps in the book Do not write translations in the text Do not copy the text Do not learn the texts by heart Understanding is not enough: have attention for form: put the text under the microscope! Use all senses simultaneously: read + listen + speak Study actively: USE the words, make your own sentences Don’t be afraid to speak or to make mistakes You now know how to prepare for the lessons. And last but not least: some do’s and don’t’s. Please do not fill in the gaps in your book. Because you’ll need the texts again later. The words have to come in your head, not in the book. Please do not write translation sin the text. Than you’ll see the words in your own language, that’s not helpful. Try to translate in your head instead. Do not copy the text. This takes a lot of time. And it turned out not to be helpful at all. Copying the texts is not efficient. Do not learn the texts by heart. Keep listening properly all the time. Understanding is not enough. Have also attention for the forms of the texts: have you mentioned all the words? Have you mentioned the word order? Etcetera. Use all your senses simultaneously: read + listen + speak. Learning with your whole body; that’s the way to learn new skills.
