7 Keys to Success (National Student Nurses’ Association) Academic Ability Caring Responsibility Confidence Determination Acceptance Eagerness to learn

Professionalism

Strategies for Building a Positive Attitude Confidence Builders Avoid perfectionism-Unattainable standard. Sets you up for failure and wastes time. Develop basic skills Strategies for Building a Positive Attitude Positive self-images Visualize goals Recognize abilities Identify realistic expectations Avoid perfectionism-Unattainable standard. ‘Nobody’s perfect’ Sets you up for failure and wastes precious time Develop basic skills: Math is a crucial skill in nursing, calculating dosages and administering medications Must be able to recognize if calculations are correct and logical. Writing skills are essential -assessments, DC summaries, teaching plans. Nursing is speaking-oriented profession, we ask a lot of questions when collecting data. Speaking in a professional manner is an attribute that nurses should exhibit at all times. Listening is an equally important communication skill. Be interested when listening, Be open, focus on message-Not messenger. Concentrate and evaluate information. writing questions while listening can help clarify information.*Listening is necessary to begin to understand and process information, such as in class lecture/discussion sessions or in the client care setting. Strategies that help to build a positive attitude include creating a positive self-image, visualizing goal attainment, recognizing personal abilities, and identifying realistic expectations. Creating a positive self-image involves the assessment of personal characteristics or attributes, both positive and negative. Listing these characteristics can help individuals to focus and build on their strengths while recognizing weaknesses that can be improved. This self-assessment should be done periodically to identify new strengths and to progress toward overcoming weaknesses. Individuals can learn to recognize abilities. It is helpful for students to identify activities or subjects at which they excel as well as those they dislike or avoid. In this process, students can identify the skills that enable them to excel at certain tasks as well as the skills they need to succeed in tasks they try to avoid; these lists will also help students to identify ways to enhance learning. Identifying realistic expectations also helps students to be successful learners and achieve goals; when students encounter obstacles, which are inevitable, expectations may need to be revised. Altering expectations, often with the help of others, allows individuals to achieve goals.

Classification of Learning Styles Visual Learner thinks in pictures Auditory Learner learns best by hearing and listening Kinesthetic Learner learns best by touch, movement, imitation, and practice classifications of learning styles or how we learn. recognize that no one style is “better” than another and that each style is used to some extent, depending on the learning situation. Visual learners prefer to obtain information through the senses by seeing it as a visual image; they relate best to information they have seen in texts or in their own notes or diagrams. For example, a visual learner who listens to a classroom lecture is likely to take notes about the subject to better master the material. *Reading notes and texts Auditory learners prefer the spoken word; they best understand information by hearing and listening to a lecture or participating in a discussion. For example, an auditory learner who listens to a classroom lecture may ask to *audiotape the lecture and review it. *Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by touch, movement, imitation, and practice; they best understand information by touching or feeling the material and by processing the information in their own way. For example, a kinesthetic learner who listens to a classroom lecture may take notes and later *rewrite them after processing the material.

Learning Style Learning Strategies How you best receive, process, and assimilate information on a particular subject Learning Strategies Know your own learning style Manage time Develop study strategy Practice critical thinking Identifying own learning style. How you best receive, process, and assimilate information on a particular subject Manage time. Develop study strategy. Practice critical thinking Learning strategies for different learning styles 1. Note-taking; read textbook and references; view video, read PowerPoint 2. Discussion; listen to audiotape 3. Draw illustration; handle equipment in nursing lab 4. Use of textbook and StudyWare; Internet use 5. Clinical experience If it works work it
