KEMASAN (FINISHES) Introduction Types of Finishes Finishes Usage

Introduction Finishes - last activities in order to make a good and beautiful finish work in building construction processes. Depending on types of building and cost allocation

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (1) Paint Suitable to be used as a protection to wood, steel, plastering, concrete and bricks materials. Paint Function: Building structures protection from any damages causes by climate, insect, and oxidation, etc. Beautiful view Easy surface cleaning process.

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (1) Paint Coloring Paint – amber, chromium, zinc oxide, etc.. Water Paint – binder (pengikat ) and thinner (pelarut). Binder – to bind coloring materials at surface painting, water proofing and smooth surface. Thinner (turpentine and white spirit) – reduce paint thickness and painting workability.

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (1) Paint Types of paint: (i) Oil paint (ii) Water paint and emulsion paint (iii) Distemper paint (iv) Special Usage: (a) Aluminum paint (b) Bitumen paint (c) Fungus-proof paint (d) Fire resistant paint

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (2) Syelek Normal usage on wood building. Syelek – natural resin from lac bugs (tahi serangga). Syelek resin resolve in alcohol – mentholated spirit. For wood polishing – French polishing. Spray or brushing. Syelek pieces will be resolved in alcohol, or ready mix materials.

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (3) Varnish (Sampang) Oil varnish type consist of natural resin (congo, manila, kauri) or substitute resin (phenolics, alkyds) will be cook in dried oil (linseed, tung) and dilute with thinner (original turpentine and spirit) Will be using at wood materials. Dry process – 12 to 24 hours. Climate and water resistant characteristics.

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (4) Wax Finishes 3 types of lilin (i) Hard Wax (lilin) (carnauba and ceresin) (ii) Medium Wax (beeswax) (iii) Soft Wax (paraffin) Wax will be diluted (and colouring) in turpentine to produce wax finishes and brushing at the surface of wood.

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (5) Plastic Lacquer Plastic lacquer consist of polyurethane, alkyd, urea and etc. which harden by chemical reaction with catalyst (pengeras) material. Type – transparency, dull color and smooth for internal and external finishes. Faster drying after spray and produced durability protection layer and chemical materials, thinner, fire resistant characteristics.

Types of Finishes (cont’d) (6) Lacquer Normal usage of lacquer – resin (nitrocellulose). Faster drying transparency finishes. Dissolve with thinner, and can be sprayed and use brush.

Finishes Usage Type of Materials Type of Finishes Wood Oil Paint, silicon (chemical substance used in varnish), lacquer (hard glossy varnish), etc.

Finishes Usage (cont’d) Types of Materials Types of Finishes Steel Oil paint Bitumen paint Lacquer Gypsum/Cement Distemper paint (chalk) Plaster Emulsion paint (water) Oil paint

Finishes Usage (cont’d) Type of Materials Type of Finishes Concrete Cement Plaster Wood strip Parquet Tile Morzaic Terrazzo

Concrete Surface Painting Procedures (1) Surface preparation (2) Paint mixes (3) Dilution (4) Paint suitable condition (5) Basic layer painting (6) Cover (7) Base layer painting (8) Finishes layer painting

Transparency Materials Finishes – Procedures (1) Surface preparation Important steps and must be done properly. Surface must be clean, smooth, no dust, free from oil stain, glue and lilin.

Transparency Materials Finishes – Procedures (cont’d) (2) Treatment at surface – steps (i) Bleaching (Pelunturan) (ii) Staining (Pelumuran) (iii) Cover (iv) To finish wood surface with transparency materials

Safety Procedures (1) Materials such as, turpentine, spirit, lacquer must be stored far from fire source. (2) During materials handling must also far from fire source. (3) Smoking restriction at work area. (4) Work place must have good air ventilation. (5) Do not suck gas from finishes materials.
