CLASS DISCUSSION From School Spirit by Johanna Hurwitz http://www.opencourtresources.com Preteaching presentation by Carol Harms, JSD 171, Orofino, ID Level 6, unit 3, lesson 2

When Mr. Flores hands out a flyer to his sixth-grade class announcing that the school board is considering shutting down the school, the students sit up and take notice. They point out that their school has a history and a place in the community

Spurred on by Mr. Flores, they recognize that their feelings about the school are so strong that they want to save it.

Genre: Realistic Fiction Characters behave as real people or animals. Settings are real or could be real. Events could happen in real life. Conflicts are similar to those of real life.

accompany to go along with These people are accompanying each other

anonymously not revealing one’s identity Example: The gift was given anonymously. No one knows who gave it.

continuity a sense of continuing over time Grandma, mom, and Susan all bake pie the same way. The recipe has shown continuity. The workers aim for continuity. They try to make the product the same way every time.

incorporate bring together, include The florist was able to incorporate many flowers in this boquet. The cyclist found a way to incorporate, or bring together, his favorite colors on his bike and uniform.

ally a person who joins a group out of a common purpose The United States was an ally of several other countries in World War II when we fought against the Germans and Japanese together. We found an ally in Linda. She worked with us to complete the report.

proposed intended planned aimed These words are synonyms. They have similar meanings. All these words express having a goal or purpose.

frostbite = _______ + ________ dragonfly = _______+ _______ silverware = ________+ _______ shipwreck = _______+ _________ Compounds words are words made up of two or more root words. Can you find the roots for each word?

arduously slightly anonymously especially What are the roots and suffixes for these words? The suffix -ly usually chagnes a word into an adjective (describes a noun) or an adverb (describe a verb)

The teacher was friendly, kind, and helpful. Which two words in this sentence are synonyms?

The outcome of the election was hotly debated. What is the compound word in this sentence? What does debated describe in this sentence?

Make a synonym chain: each person adds a synonym to the list for the following word. Try to come up with at least ten synonyms. Hot…...

Making Inferences An inference is based on information from the story and on personal experience and knowledge.

You infer: She burned her hand. For example: Mrs. Harms was cooking at the stove. Suddenly she screamed, grabbed her hand, and rushed to the sink to put her hand in cold water. Your information from the story is that she screamed, grabbed her hand, put cold water on it. Your experience and knowledge tells you that a stove is hot, it is possible to get burned, and that you should put cold water on burns. You infer: She burned her hand.
