Making Inferences An inference is based on information from the story and on personal experience and knowledge.

You infer: She burned her hand. For example: Mrs. Harms was cooking at the stove. Suddenly she screamed, grabbed her hand, and rushed to the sink to put her hand in cold water. Your information from the story is that she screamed, grabbed her hand, put cold water on it. Your experience and knowledge tells you that a stove is hot, it is possible to get burned, and that you should put cold water on burns. You infer: She burned her hand.
