Challenges of Globalization

Defn: The process by which an ethnic group loses its distinct language and culture and becomes absorbed by the dominant group. The USA “melting pot” society attempts this. Ex: Assimilation

Defn: One culture modifying itself to fit with the dominate culture. Ex: Accommodation

Defn: The process by which all cultures gradually lose their distinctive features and one blended culture results (sometimes also called a “monoculture”) Ex: Homogenization

Defn: The result of a less dominant ethnic group taking some of the habits and customs of the dominant society, thereby becoming incompletely assimilated, but no longer belonging to any cultural group. Ex: The Acadians Marginalization

Defn: The joining of various ethnic groups within a society into a common society with generally accepted values. Multiculturalism in Canada presumes social integration without a loss of culture. Ex: Integration

Defn: the process of cultures changing to produce a new culture. Ex: Metis, Acadians Hybridization
