Earth Layers Stations

What are the lithosphere and asthenosphere??? How do the layers of the Earth cause the plates to move? Lithosphere: Made of the Crust & Upper Mantle. Broken into tectonic plates! Asthenosphere: The layer of solid rock below the lithosphere that has so much pressure and heat the rocks can flow like a liquid. This causes the lithosphere plates to move. Convection Currents: Rising and sinking of hot rock (magma) due to differences in density or temperature.

Write it! Directions: Using the diagram and article in the folder, write how a skateboard would model plate movement. The following terms should be in your explanation: Lithosphere, Asthenosphere, Convection Currents. Make sure to explain what each part of the skateboard (wheels, board, circular motion of the wheels) would represent. You should use information from the reading to support your explanation!

Research it! Directions: Use the Earth Layers poster to fill in the temperature, state of matter, and thickness. Use the paragraphs in the textbook on Pg. 190- 193 to fill in composition. Read it! Directions: Read the article “How Do We Know About Earth’s Interior?” in the folder and answer the question below. Describe 2 methods that Scientists use to study the characteristics about the Earth’s layers.

Organize it! Must complete read it and research it before coming to station! Directions: Match each layer, to the picture, to the description. Try to do it without using your notes, and then use your notes to check it. Finally, raise your hand to have Ms. Hilgefort check and sign it.

Map it! Directions: Using the paragraph to the right, fill in the venn diagram on your worksheet to compare and contrast Continental and oceanic crust. There should be at least 3 differences (hint: compare the density, thickness, location, & composition) and 1 similarity

Label it! Directions: Use the definitions on your sheet to label the diagram. Use the word bank!

Assess it! Directions: Answer the 6 questions on your sheet. Check your answers using the answer key in the folder. If incorrect, analyze why the actual answer is correct.

Brainstorm: Groups 3D MODEL: Your Model must: Be 3-dimensional (3D) Have 4 main layers and additional layers (see below) Be Neat, Complete, Creative, and Colorful Materials for 3-D Model: Be Creative! Recycled materials and other ideas are (cloth, paper mache, plastic bottles, etc…) encouraged to reduce cost and get extra credit. Common materials: Styrofoam ball, toothpicks, paper, and paint. ***If you need help getting materials or making the project YOU must speak with Ms. Hilgefort BEFORE Friday! Put all materials besides station sheet under your table. What materials does your group need to bring in by Wednesday to model the 4 main layers of the Earth? Write down in agendas what you (individually) need to bring You may bring in supplies to school Monday-Wednesday (due Thursday) Write down in agendas what you need to bring If you prefer to create the 3-D model as on your own at home, you may (just let Ms. Hilgefort and your group know today) When finished, start stations.
