Campus

Libraries of ELTE Study and research are supported by the University Library Service on the campuses of ELTE. There are libraries attached to faculties, departments and other institutions of the University. The ELTE libraries use an integrated library system called Aleph.

School of English and American Studies (SEAS) Library

The most important library rules The use of the Library is only available for registered readers. Registration is done in person, by filling out and signing the library data sheet at the circulation desk. Our readers are either issued a loan pass or a visitor’s pass, depending on their eligibility. The registration must be revalidated every September. Please present your student card or library card to the librarians and leave it at the circulation desk before entering the Reading Room. You’ll reveive a locker key at the desk.

Active students, teachers and employees of the School of English-American Studies and PhD students are eligible to borrow books and other material from the Library. Overcoats and other kinds of outdoor clothing, umbrellas, bags, cases, and similar personal belongings shall be deposited in the locker-room during each visit to the Library. It is strictly forbidden to bring food and drink into the Library except water in closed clear bottles or sealable plastic cups. Blue baskets are available for personal belongings.

What-Where? c. 80000 volumes: books, periodicals, old&new MA thesis papers, AV material Open access (Reading Room): non-fiction, based on the Library of Congress Classification System Language Pedagogy (LP/A-LP/W) Arts current periodicals Stacks (closed access): fiction additional non-fiction&multiple copies of LP MA thesis papers university textbooks periodicals American Collection Rare books collection Video-cassettes

HOW TO FIND OUR BOOKS The library catalogue, will help you to find books and other items. It gives a call number for each item which is the code on the spine of the book. Please always find the call number in the online catalogue, because the books are shelved by call numbers both in the closed stacks and in the Reading Room. The catalogue contains not only our documents but items in other ELTE libraries. Please check whether the items really are in this library. Please fill out the request slips fully and correctly.

Stacks, request slip

Reading Room Most books in the Reading Room are available for loan. The books which are marked with a golden tape on the spine may only be checked out overnight or over a weekend.

Borrowing You are not allowed to borrow anything without your library card and you can borrow only for yourself. Students of the SEAS may borrow up to 7 books and 3 reference materials for one night or over a weekend. The loan period varies by document: overnight (from closing until opening), 1 and 2 weeks, 1 month or 1 semester. Reminders and overdue notices are sent by e-mail or via regular mail. Regular loan books may be renewed online (within 10 days of the due date), in person, or by phone if no one else has reserved them. Email renewal is NOT available. If you are unable to renew online, please contact the library for help. >>

If the book you want is currently checked out, you may place a request for it in person at the Circulation Desk. As long as a reader has overdue document(s) or outstanding fine(s), he/she can not use library services or borrow book(s) in any ELTE member library. A fine is charged for each day an item is overdue, including weekends and holidays.

Catalogue Aleph, the online public access catalogue for ELTE University libraries, including the SEAS Library, is available on terminals within the Library. The online catalogue contains bibliographic and item data about SEAS books processed since February 1998, and items acquired prior to 1998 have been retrospectively added to the database. The catalogue indicates which libraries own each title as well as the availability of each copy of every title. http://opac.elte.hu (Click on English)

Search the catalogue To find a specific book or books on a particular topic, start with the online catalogue. It will tell you which books we own, and will give you the location and call number you need to find the book on the shelf or to request it from the stacks. You can search the catalogue using the title, author or any combination of keywords.
