Schooled: The Price of College Sports

Intro The actions of the NCAA and their treatment of student athletes has long been a major issue. If you ever asked the question “why are so many underclassmen entering the NFL draft, this film has many of the answers you seek.

Summary “Schooled: The Price of College Sports” takes the viewer into the world of college sports, a multi-billion dollar professional enterprise, carried out by amateur “student athletes”. The rise of the NCAA from a little noted union into the one of the most powerful, and profitable, governing bodies in the whole world of sport is tracked, as we are shown the evolution of sponsorship and media rights deals worth fortunes, for which the players receive nothing, except their degree. But even this is questioned, as the ethical conduct of some colleges is questioned, leading to the comment “These kids may get a degree, but they don’t get an education.” Works Cited: http://www.thefootballeducator.com/reviewing-schooled-price-college-sports/

Assignment: After watching and hearing different viewpoints on whether student athletes should be paid, each student will Pretend they are writing for ESPN the Magazine. They have asked you to create a powerpoint on whether or not college athletes should be paid. This powerpoint has be a minimum of 10 slides long. Facts need to be real…numbers, charts, graphs, direct quotes off the NCAA website, etc.…someone writing an article for ESPN or CNN is not fact it is often their opinion. Find real facts!!!!

Assignment Students will be responsible for finding FOUR facts to support their argument. The Four facts need to be FOUR different facts. These FOUR facts will help make your powerpoint credible. The overall goal is, convince me your argument is correct. Make sure any quotes you use from any sources are cited in your powerpoint in the notes section of each slide.

(They should not be paid) Why shouldn’t they be paid?? Give facts to support your argument Steer away from giving a lot of your opinion here. I am looking for facts to help support your opinion. Take notes during the documentary, it could really help you out

Questions to think about Do student athletes deserve to be paid? Is a tuition-free education enough? Should athletes be allowed to make money off their own names and likenesses (through sponsorships, autograph signings, etc.)

Research Do the research….it will pay off There are a few court cases that will help you in either side of the argument. Look for them and use them Research the NCAA as a business Research how much conferences make on bowl games Research the value of a 4 year education Research the perks athletes get in college
