3.3 24 September 2014

Cell membrane : aka the plasma membrane; boundary between cell and environment. A bilayer of phospholipids.

A phospholipid : molecule with a charged phosphate group, glycerol, and TWO fatty acid chains.

Cell Membrane Composition

Cell Membrane Composition

Mosaic: a picture or decoration made of small, usually colored pieces of inlaid stone, glass, etc.

Fluid Mosaic Model: arrangement of molecules making up cell membrane.

Fluid Mosaic

Selective Permeability: allows some, but not all materials to enter.

Small, nonpolar molecules tend to pass through the cell membrane easily. Larger molecules are moved using vesicles.
