Branches in the Royal Navy Outline of branches & specialisations in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service (QARNNS), and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

How the Royal Navy fits together: The Surface Fleet – the ships of the RN make up the surface Fleet. The Fleet Air Arm – the helicopters and fixed wing aircraft make up the Navy’s air force (Fleet Air Arm). The Submarine Service – the submarines (Ballistic and Fleet) make up the Submarine Service The Royal Marines – the amphibious Commandos (Royal Navy’s Infantry) and the RM Band Service make up the Royal Marines.

The Surface Fleet

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Warfare Branch Seaman Specialist – steer the ship, seamanship tasks (towing, anchoring etc), crew Rigid Inflatable boats & operate ships close range weapons. Warfare Specialist – running operations room computers, gather radar & sonar picture of ships, submarines & aircraft, and specialise in above water, underwater or electronic warfare.

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Hydrographic, Meteorological & Oceanographic Specialist – surveyor who gathers vital data about weather and ocean conditions.

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Communications & Information Systems Specialist – transmitting, receiving signals using satellite links and message handling systems. Communications Technician - An analytical and discreet communications expert, who uses military communications systems to gather and interpret a range of vital information.

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Mine Warfare Specialist – prepares and carries out operations required to locate and dispose of mines Mine Clearance Diver – Uses state of the art equipment to disable or destroy mines or other explosive devices.

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Engineering Branch Engineering Technician (Weapon Engineering) – maintenance & repair of weapons, communications, radar & sonar. Engineering Technician (Marine Engineering) – maintains and operates ships propulsion, ventilation, fuel and water systems.

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Logistics Branch Logistician (Personnel) – maintaining personnel records, offering advice about pay & allowances, keeping accounts etc. Logistician (Supply Chain) – manage stores inventory using computerised accounts (warehouse at sea).

The Surface Fleet (specialisations) Logistician Catering Services (Chef) – prepares & cooks nutritious food for the ships company Logistician Catering Services (Steward) – Organisation of preparation and serving & accounting of food & drink.

The Surface Fleet Officer (specialisations) Warfare Officer – seaman, navigate and fight the ship. Weapon Engineer Officer – oversee repair & maintenance of weapon systems & sensors. Marine Engineer Officer - oversee repair & maintenance of propulsion and essential service systems. Logistics Officer – lead and manage the Logistics specialisations. Engineer Officer (information systems) – manages the IT & communications systems onboard. Engineer Officer (Training Management) – managing training & development for all in the Navy

The Fleet Air Arm

The Fleet Air Arm (Specialisations ) Naval Airman (Aircraft Handler) – prepare the flight deck, marshal aircraft and look after flight safety including fire- fighting. Naval Airman (Survival Equipment) – maintain & repair survival kit and associated equipment

The Fleet Air Arm (Specialisations ) Air Engineering Technicians’ - ensure aircraft's systems for navigation, detection and attack operational, routine servicing, maintenance of the aircraft fuselage, flying controls and propulsion systems, hydraulic and fuel systems, as well as weapons and electronic warfare, navigation and digital communications systems, power supplies and radar.

The Fleet Air Arm Officer (Specialisations ) Aircrew Officer = Pilot – fly either helicopters or fast jets (Harrier) Observer – in helicopters only and ‘fight the aircraft’ Air Traffic Control Officer – control the aircraft on radar and responsible for safety. Air Engineer Officer – manage the technicians to ensure aircraft safe and operational.

The Submarine Service

The Submarine Service (Specialisations ) Warfare Rating = Communications & Information Specialist – operating all the communications equipment. Tactical – tracking targets using radar and listening equipment Sensors – Operating sonar equipment

The Submarine Service (Specialisations ) Engineering Technician (Weapon Engineering Submariner) – maintenance & repair of onboard weapon and sensor systems. Engineering Technician (Marine Engineering Submariner) – maintenance & repair of nuclear reactor, engines ventilation and water systems.

The Submarine Service Officer (Specialisations ) Warfare Officer – seaman, navigate and fight the ship. Weapon Engineer Officer – oversee repair & maintenance of weapon systems & sensors. Marine Engineer Officer - oversee repair & maintenance of propulsion and essential service systems. Logistics Officer – lead and manage the logistics specialisations.

The Royal Marines

The Royal Marines (Specialisations) General Duties – (Rifleman) most RM start out as GD Marine in a Commando before training in a specialisation. Specialisations available after initial training Aircrewman – fly in Commando helicopters Assault Engineer – construction (build bridges) and destruction (learn about explosives)

The Royal Marines (Specialisations) Heavy Weapons (Air Defence / Anti Tank / Mortar) Armourer – maintain / repair weapons Metalsmith – maintain / repair equipment used Landing Craft – pilot water borne assault vehicles Reconnaissance Operator – provide Commando with advanced information, 1st step to becoming a Mountain Leader

The Royal Marines (Specialisations) Swimmer Canoeist (SBS) RM equivalent of SAS Combat Intelligence – gather intelligence Communications Technician – intercept radio activity Information Systems – design and maintain IT systems

The Royal Marines (Specialisations) Signals – provide all types of communications Telecommunications Technician – maintain & repair communications equipment Yeoman of Signals – Communication planning

The Royal Marines (Specialisations) Armoured Support (Viking) drive and maintain vehicle Driver – drive a range of vehicles Vehicle Mechanic – maintain vehicles Medical Assistant – learn advanced FA Military Police – law enforcement / security duties

The Royal Marines (Specialisations) Chef – keep the Commandos fed Clerk – provide administration support, pay etc Stores Accountant – keep RM supplied with kit etc Platoon Weapons Instructor – expert in weapons Drill Instructor – play key role in recruit training Physical Training Instructor – keep RM’s fit

The Royal Marines Band Service Join as a Musician / Bugler

The Royal Marines Officer (Specialisations) Once RM Officer training complete can work in: Heavy Weapons / Intelligence / PT & Sport / Weapons Training / Staff Officer / Pilot / Landing Craft / Mountain Leader / Signals / Special Boats Squadron.

The Royal Navy Medical Service (RNMS) Medical Assistant (General Service / Submarines / RM) – expert in medical care & administration Naval Nurse – Nurse in hospital, medical centre (field), member of QARNNS. Dental Surgery Assistant – dental nurse in support of dentist

The Royal Navy Medical Service (RNMS) Officers – Medical Officer – Doctor Dental Officer – Dentist Nursing Officer – trained nurse, I/C Nurses’ & member of QARNNS

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (Ratings) Communications - master all types (radio, teletype, satellite etc) Deck – Seaman – helmsman, RAS, driving crane etc Logistics & Supply - catering, chef, steward, laundryman Engineering – maintain / repair mechanical & electrical systems on board

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (Officers) Join as Officer Cadet and specialise either as a Deck Officer (Seamanship, Navigation etc) or Engineering Officer (ship operating systems)
