How to create an Interactive Science Notebook (ISN)

It’s YOUR book! This notebook is going to be a treasure of all the unbelievably, amazing, incredibly cool science stuff you will learn this year!!!

What is an ISN? -A student thinking tool -Organizer for inquiry questions -A place for taking notes -A formative assessment tool for teachers -A study guide for exams

Why use ISN? Allows you to be creative! Improves organization skills Improves critical thinking skills Teachers can write notes in the book to communicate with student

Impact of Hands-on Science Notebooks Research shows that student understanding and literacy skills improve when students do hands-on, minds-on science and use science notebooks to put terms in their own words.

What every book needs… Colorful Cover Page Explanation of book with signatures Rubric Table of Contents ALL pages numbered Notes/Activities Reflections

Left side Vs. Right side (After Table of Contents) Right Side (Output) Left Side (Input) This side is the Teacher input and content. Best understood in black/blue ink or pencil. Content information from the days lesson. This side is the students’ responses to the content. Best remembered in CoLoR! Shows understanding of the day’s lesson.
