Do Now: Writer’s Notebook What is the most influential thing that affects a person’s cultural perspective? Why?

Claim state that something is true, without offering proof or evidence. Ex. Parents are the most important influence on cultural perspective

Counter claim an argument or set of reasons put forward to oppose another claim. Ex. Claim: Parents are the most important influence on cultural perspective Counterclaim: Ethnicity is the most important influence on cultural perspective

Let’s Develop Some Counterclaims Work with your table partner Come up with at least two other things that have a huge influence on your cultural perspective.

Argument a reason or set of claims given with the aim of persuading others that an idea is right or wrong. Offers proof to support claims made Addresses counterclaims in order to persuade effectively

Turn your Claims into Argument For your do now and your counterclaims, provide at least one piece of proof.

Discussion Time! CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas. Work with peers to set rules for collegial discussions and decision- making (e.g., informal consensus, taking votes on key issues, presentation of alternate views), clear goals and deadlines, and individual roles as needed.

Round 1 Round 2 What is the most important factor that influences cultural perspective? What other factors are important to influencing cultural perspective? Socratic Seminar

Writing Groups Create a thesis for your synthesis essay: Pick one of these thesis frames: The factors that most influence cultural perspective are ______, _______, and _____. __________, _________, and _________ influence a person’s perspective of culture.
