DO NOW!!! F, T, F, F All cells have the same structure and function. Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus. Plant cells are the same as animal cells. All organism are multicellular. F, T, F, F

Cell Structure and Function Unit 1 Lesson 3

Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic 2 types of cells Big difference: Prokaryotes – no nucleus Eukaryotes - nucleus Prokaryotes = primitive cells = bacteria

Characteristics of eukaryotic cells Eukaryotic cells differ - depending on their structure and function. Structure - arrangement of parts. Function - activity the parts carry out. All eukaryotic cells - nucleus, membrane-bound organelles, parts that protect and support cell. 5

Cell Membrane & Cytoskeleton Cell membrane – protects cell by serving as a boundary between inside and outside Regulates what enters and leaves cell. Cytoskeleton – network of protein filaments that give shape and support to cell Helps in cell division and movement. 6

Nucleus Contains cell’s genetic material (DNA). Surrounded by a nuclear membrane -controls what goes in and out through nuclear pores. 9

DNA Genetic info – in nucleus. Found on chromosomes – 23 pairs or 46 total in each human cell Have instructions for making proteins

Nucleus The nucleolus is the nuclear subdomain that assembles ribosomal subunits in eukaryotic cells. The nucleolar organiser regions of chromosomes, which contain the genes for pre‐ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA), serve as the foundation for nucleolar structure.

Activity http://www.biomanbio.com/GamesandLabs/Cellgames/CellExplorerAnimalCell.html Cell Explorer: The Animal Cell Complete Mission 1: Recon Learn parts of the cell

HW Read pages 28 to 29 in your textbook and complete questions 8 through 11.

Label Animal Cell Worksheet DO NOW!!! Label Animal Cell Worksheet

Organelles found in Plant / Animal Cells Cellular respiration - process where cells get energy by breaking down food. Mitochondria – where cellular respiration occurs. Have own DNA and 2 membranes. 15

Surface area increases cellular respiration Folded - more Surface area increases cellular respiration - Smooth Breaks down sugar to make ATP – energy for cell.

Ribosomes Makes proteins – linking together chains of amino acids. Not enclosed in membrane. Some free Some Attached The ribosomes that are free make proteins that stay inside the cell and the ribosomes that are attached to the ER. Make proteins that leave the cell. Such as hormones. 17

The ER’s

Folding membrane spotted with ribosomes Creates proteins and new membranes

No ribosomes on surface Creates lipids and stores calcium. Detoxifies poisons, alcohol, and drugs.

Golgi Complex (GC) Flattened membrane sacs – package / distributes materials Lipids + proteins from ER are modified in GC for different jobs. Pinched off parts of the GC membrane carry products out of cell or to other parts of cell 22

Cell Drawing Group with partners of original cell drawing Pick one: Mitochondria, Ribosome, Rough ER, Smooth ER, or Golgi Complex Draw a detailed picture of the organelle – write out its function Cut the picture out and glue it on your original cell drawing

HW Read pages 30 - 32 and complete questions 13 to 18.

DO NOW!!! Complete question 19 on page 33 in your textbook. (Don’t sketch each organelle just complete the check marks)

Organelles found in Plant Cells Cell wall - rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane Provides support and structure Some fungi, archaea, bacteria, and protists have cell walls. 28

Vacuole Fluid-filled vesicle found in animal, plant, and fungi cells Contains enzymes, nutrients, water, or waste. Plant cell - large central vacuole – stores water and supports cell 31

Chloroplast Plant organelle where photosynthesis occurs. Photosynthesis - process where cells use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make sugar and oxygen. Have Green pigment called chlorophyll, which absorbs solar energy – makes them look green in color 33

Organelles found in Animal Cells Lysosomes - contain digestive enzymes. Break down damaged organelles, waste material, or foreign invaders. Some of these materials are collected in vacuoles. Lysosome attaches to the vacuole and releases the digestive enzymes inside. 36

Animal Cell

Activity http://www.biomanbio.com/GamesandLabs/Cellgames/CellExplorerAnimalCell.html Cell Explorer: The Animal Cell Complete Mission 4: Construct a cell. This will be a lab grade so take your time to construct it correctly. Use your notes to help you. Possibly use as a lab grade.

Activity Day: Cell Bingo Directions: With word list on board create your Cell Bingo Sheet – have another sheet where you write the definition for each word!!! Pens and Pencils Away We are playing 5 in a Row Bingo to start off with!!! When I call a word and say definition – you cancel out word First 5 in a row – WINS!!!!

Full Board Bingo Directions: Please take just your bingo board with all the Biology cell words on it out and place it in front of your at your desk!!!
