Industrial economy is a way of describing that the Northern economy (how those states make money) was based on factories and mass production.

Agricultural economy is a way to describe that the South made their money from farming.

The Union was another name for the North and the United States.

Border states were slave states that stayed in the Union during the Civil War.

The 11 states that seceded from the Union were called the Confederate States of America.

When the government starts forced enrollment in the armed forces, it is called a draft.

Presidents and Generals of the North & South

Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president and held the country together during the Civil War.

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederacy.

Ulysses S. Grant was a Union General (the North) who won important battles in the west and became our 18th president.

Robert E. Lee was a skilled and respected Confederate General (the South), military leader, and was trained at West Point.

A camp is a place where temporary shelters are set up especially for soldiers or travelers.

Matthew Brady was a Northern photographer Matthew Brady was a Northern photographer. He took pictures of camp life and battlefields.

A civilian is a person not serving in the armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines…). The people watching the armed forces parade are civilians These children are civilians.

Antietam was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, there were approximately 23,000 casualties.

General Lee of the Confederacy surrendered to General Grant of the Union at the Appomattox Court House. The Civil War was over.
