Register to use the Library x SWBH Library Services Find the libraries We provide library services to all the staff and students on placement at SWBH. We offer a wide range of services and are happy to help with all your information enquiries. About Base-Library There are two libraries, one in the Education Centre at Sandwell and the other in the Postgraduate Centre at City. The library at Sandwell is currently closed for refurbishment and is due to open in October 2017. Staff are based in the library at City, from 8.30-4.30 Monday to Friday. We are part of the Base-Library group ; 22 NHS libraries in Birmingham, Black Country and Solihull with access to over 83,000 items. Where to find us x Clinical Library, Sandwell: Map of Sandwell Clinical Library, Sandwell: This library is currently closed. Bevan Library, City: Our staffed hours are 8.30-4.30 Monday-Friday. The library is located on the ground floor of the Postgraduate Centre. Access between 8.30-4 is through the centre. Out of these hours access is via the rear door using a City issued ID badge . x Base-Libraries Register for the library We are part of the Base-Library group; 22 NHS libraries in Birmingham, Black Country and Solihull. Registering with us gives you access to all of SWBH’s items, and all those held at other Base-Libraries, meaning you get access to over 83,000 resources! Base Library Website Search for a book You also get access the Base-Library online catalogue, where you can : Search our catalogue 24/7 Place reservations Renew borrowed items You are able to borrow 10 items and (if no one else wants them) renew them up to 3 times. You can renew via the website, phone, email, at our kiosks or in person. Other libraries access policy Article Requests Literature Searches E-Learning Contact us To login to the website, use your library card number and your PIN. The default PIN is 1111, but please change that to something more secure.

Online registration form x How to register ALL staff and students on placement at SWBH are welcome to join the library. To join - Online registration form Base-Libraries In person at City: Just pop in with your trust ID badge and fill out the form. External Users Contact us Register Online : Fill out the form and email it to us. We can only post library cards to work addresses when they are submitted via this internet form, so please be sure to fill your work address in clearly. We recommend you use an NHS or University email account to register as personal email accounts such as gmail or hotmail can block our email notifications for when you have books due for return. External users (GP’s, reps, members of the public etc) are also welcome, but have different usage restrictions, please see the button to the left for further information.

Register with the Library x Article Requests Register with the Library Articles can be requested via our online request service, BaseDoc. You must be registered with the library to use this service BaseDoc Your sign in details will be your library card number and PIN that you use on the Base Library website (default is 1111). If no account is found, please self-register on the home page, and staff can validate your account. Contact us Library Charges Literature Searches Once registered, login and you will see your request options. We always try and source articles freely, however, please see Library Charges for details. Please feel free to submit as many requests as you need. We will work on them and update their details within BaseDoc so you can track their progress. Where possible we will email the articles straight to you. You can also use this system to request Literature Searches.

x Literature Searches It doesn’t matter if you are searching for evidence for a research paper, an audit or a patient information leaflet, we can perform a search and find the information for you! BaseDoc Contact us These searches (literature searches) can be requested via our online system, BaseDoc. Info skills training Your sign in details will be your library card number and PIN that you use on the Base Library website (default is 1111). If no account is found, please self-register on the home page, and staff can validate your account. E-learning Healthcare Databases Once registered, login and you will see your request options. Please supply as much detail as possible. Our target turnaround time is 3 working days, although it is unusual for it to take this long! Unfortunately, we cannot complete literature searches for assignments, as you will be getting marked on your ability to find relevant evidence. If you would like some training on how to perform these searches yourself please see our info skills training section.

Register for OpenAthens x OpenAthens Register for OpenAthens Registering for OpenAthens gives you access to all of our online books, journals and other online resources. This includes: Over 4000 journals 1100 books Full use of ClinicalKey All staff and students on placement are entitled to an OpenAthens account. Sign in to OpenAthens Access e-journals Info skills training Search the databases We recommend you register on a trust PC or using your NHS email address as this gives you instant access. If you register using a non-nhs email or on a home PC it may take a little more time as someone will have to check your eligibility. ClinicalKey BNF

Sign in to OpenAthens Titles include The Lancet, JAMA, Nursing Times and many, many more! Access e-journals If you are looking for a specific journal title use the link to the left to see if we have it. However, if you are looking for articles on any given topic, you will need to search the databases. Register for OpenAthens x Healthcare Databases If you need to find articles or evidence to support your work or study you should search our Healthcare Databases. Information Skills Training x Information Skills Training E-learning Looking for help on how to search databases, write a bibliography, critically appraise an article or would just like some information about how to use the library? Contact us Our friendly staff are more than happy to sit down with you and show you how to find the information you require. This can be a quick 20 minute ‘bitesized’ session, covering the basics or refreshing your memory, or a more in depth, detailed session covering various methods and websites. Either in groups or individually, it completely depends on what is more suited to your needs. Critical Appraisal These sessions can be conducted at both libraries or in your department, for both SWBH staff and BCPFT staff, please get in touch and we can book you in.

x E-learning E-learning website e-LfH is a Health Education England Programme working in partnership with the NHS and professional bodies to support patient care by providing e-learning to educate and train the health and social care workforce. e-LfH is now in the process of delivering over 150 e-learning programmes in partnership with the professional bodies such as Royal Colleges and associations, Department of Health policy teams, NHS England and Public Health England. x ClinicalKey ClinicalKey is a website that is accessible using your OpenAthens details, which contains: 500+Journals 1,100+ Books Nearly 3 million images 28,000 videos The smart search offers more than similar searches in that it suggests related clinical information as you are searching. It also offers their First Consult feature, which gives users current and up to date information on over 800 clinical topics. All the images can be exported into Powerpoint and Keynote with their relevant copyright information meaning finding presentation images is nice and easy! Register for a personal account with them to be able to download book chapters. You also get to use their presentation maker, you can save content and you can choose from over 15,000 patient education hand-outs, customisable to fit each patients specific needs. Remember to sign in using OpenAthens when trying to access this resource! OpenAthens ClinicalKey

x Trip Database Trip Database A freely available resource, Trip is a clinical search engine designed to allow users to quickly and easily find and use high-quality research evidence to support their practice and care. As well as research evidence it also allows users to search across other content types including images, videos, patient information leaflets, educational courses and news.

x Pubmed OpenAthens Search over 5,000 journals covering medicine, nursing, dentistry and pre-clinical sciences. Pubmed Access from work or home without an Athens Account at the point of access. Where available you can link to online articles, for these an OpenAthens Account will be required. x Cochrane Library The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases in medicine and other healthcare specialties provided by the Cochrane Collaboration and other organisations. The Cochrane Library aims to make the results of well-conducted controlled trials readily available and is a key resource in evidence-based medicine. x Search for a book The online catalogue searches all of the libraries in Base-Library, meaning you can see what is available across the whole region. You can reserve items to be brought to an SWBH library for you. Items brought to City can be collected between 8.30-4.30 Monday to Friday. Items cannot be collected from Sandwell as the library is closed for refurbishment. If you work at Sandwell, or the community, we can post your reservations out to your department. Please let us know if that is your preference and we can arrange it. We also have a collection of the Books on Prescription.
