Engaging Partners for FP4 Group work during the launch, Addis, Feb 2018 Patrick Okori FP4 Leader, CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes and Dryland Cereals (GLDC)

Clusters of activity 4.1: Environment characterization and phenotyping CoA 4.1 Target populations of environment analysis; Prescribe the set of target locations and future production environments WCA: One legume crop and One cereal crop )-(CGIAR, IKCs, Innovation labs, NARS, SROs, Private sector) Phenotyping:   Trait-based in the field and under and high precision. Traits to be refined after validation with partners Leverage ongoing partner and CRP legacy work (input and output traits)-(CGIAR, IKCs, Innovation labs)

Clusters of Activity 4.2. Breeding pipelines Breeding activities Leverage ongoing efforts legacy work (crop-wise) (CGIAR, IKCs, NARS, AATF, Innovation labs) Validate product concept notes by partners (CGIAR, IKCs, Innovation labs NARS, Private sector- Seed Co and others, AATF) Leverage and or expand MET supported by CoA 1 ( may be post year 1) (CGIAR, IKCs, NARS, Private sector- Seed Co and others). Capacity strengthening Leverage HRD programmes (WACCI, RUFORUM, Innovation labs) Map deployed breeders for engagement in FP4 (AGRA, AATF) Program operations- Performance review, planning and data management (CGIAR + Private sector.. Seed CO, AATF)

Clusters of Activity 4.2. Breeding pipelines Product concept notes Legacy material….Are they aligned to PCN? Validate trait portfolio with partners Current clusters under which various traits fall Yield and resilience enhancing traits; Resource-use efficient and crop architecture traits, that reduce agronomy costs and drudgery; User preferences for nutritional quality, post-harvest handling and value addition; and Enhance role of GLDC crops as sources of feed/stover/forage for livestock in agri-food system.

Clusters of Activity 4.3: Product testing and release Activate and or leverage crop networks for testing. (NARS, SROs, Private sector- Seed Co and others) Partnership engineering for testing, release and commercialization Consider leverage and or reactivation of crop networks. Stakeholders include SROs NARS Private sector

Clusters of Activity 4.4: Scaling seed and allied technologies Study current seed systems to inform priorities, scheduling and partnership profiles CORAF- leverage West African Agricultural Transformation Project (WAATP) ASARECA-leverage East Central Africa Agriculture Transformation Project (ECAATP). AGRA- Seed Co- ESA and WCA Africa operations others Some of key issues Drivers of dysfunctionality Best practices Demand side-issues, awareness, access.

FP4: Implementation framework Several consortia to be engaged in crop improvement NARES CGIAR International Knowledge/Science Centers Academia and capacity building institutions Private sector Civil society Farmer organizations Consider crops/ commodity based networks for convening consortia Draw lessons from the SROs (ASARECA, CORAF, CCARDESA and APAARI)

FP4: Implementation framework: Approaches FP4 value add Products and services of a regional nature Strengthen national investments Leverage other regional investments Capacity strengthening for research and innovation delivery R&D investments (especially by SROs, IARCs and private sector) Operations strategy : (two approaches proposed) Aggregation (Collective development, critical partners engaged in R4D Best shot (Hub + spokes where a lead partner developed lead center Aggregation Partner 1 Partner 2 Partner 3 Partner 4 Best short

Potential Partnership Portfolio CoA Type of activities Partnership portfolio 4.1. Environment environment testing Multi-environment testing Precision phenotyping Research agencies (public and private) Seed companies with on-farm testing Civil society with farmer engagements 4.2. Breeding pipeline 9 crops, Diverse traits 4.3. Product Testing and release 9 crops (diverse ecology * market) 4.4. Science of scaling 9 crops in (11 SSA), 2 (SA) countries + spill over countries Seed companies Civil society, Farmer organizations

Group work: Road Map What is our partnership architecture for implementation R&D (CoA 1-3) Variety development Environment testing Capacity development for Research to delivery Delivery (CoA 4) Scaling out innovation See the forms applied Leadership structure for core activities- leverage,
