Creating an economy that boosts productivity and earning power throughout the UK

Industrial Strategy Grand Challenges AI and Data Economy Ageing Society Clean Growth Future of Mobility

How the ISCF challenges fit with the Industrial Strategy Grand Challenges Clean growth Energy revolution Transforming construction Transforming food production Ageing Society Medicines manufacturing Data to early diagnosis and precision medicine Healthy ageing Future of mobility Faraday battery challenge Extreme robotics National space test facility Artificial intelligence and data economy Audience of the future / Next generation services (pioneer) / Quantum technology (pioneer)

Wave 1 – Medicines Manufacturing £146m to develop first-of-a-kind technologies for the manufacture of tomorrow’s medicines, accelerating patient access to new drugs and treatments: pharmaceuticals vaccines advanced therapies + Digital Health Technology Catalyst £35m to develop digital health or digitally-enabled medical technologies to: improve patient outcomes transform healthcare delivery enable more efficient delivery of healthcare

The challenge has 2 investment streams: innovation and scale-up Stage 1: Collaborative Research and Development Competitive funding calls to support development and innovation to translate scientific, clinical, digital, engineering or manufacturing research into a proof of concept demonstration. Industry-led activity between academic, technology providers, and supply chain companies Demonstrating the feasibility of new technologies and new medicines Stage 1: Innovation £90m Stage 2: Scale-up £91m

The challenge has 2 investment streams: innovation and scale-up Stage 1: Collaborative Research and Development Three competitive funding calls have been run and initial funding awarded: Digital Health Technology Catalyst (total fund £35m)* Medicines Manufacturing CR&D (total fund £25m)* Advanced Therapies Treatment Centres (total fund £30m) Stage 1: Innovation £90m Stage 2: Scale-up £91m * Round 2 calls for DHTC (£8m) & Medicines Manufacturing CR&D (£10m) open Feb and March 2018

The challenge has 2 investment streams: innovation and scale-up Stage 2: Capital investment in UK medicines manufacturing infrastructure Competitive funding calls for capital investment Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre Viral Vector production for cell and gene therapies Vaccines Development & Manufacturing Centre Stage 1: Innovation £90m Stage 2: Scale-up £91m In addition to these funding competitions £12m from the ISCF has been committed for Phase 2 of the Cell & Gene Therapy Manufacturing Centre

The challenge has 2 investment streams: innovation and scale-up Stage 2: Capital investment in UK medicines manufacturing infrastructure Support growth of UK medicines manufacturing capacity and capability to produce tomorrow’s medicines Cell and gene therapies Vaccines Pharmaceuticals Stage 1: Innovation £90m Stage 2: Scale-up £91m

Wave 1 – Medicines Manufacturing ISCF Competitions 2018 Fund Status Digital Health Technology Catalyst round 2 £8m Opens 15/02/18 Medicines manufacturing round 2: challenge fund £10m Opens 12/03/18

Data to early diagnosis and precision medicine – The challenge is to combine the wealth of data created by UK researchers with real world evidence from our health service. That will allow industry to create new products and services that will diagnose diseases earlier and help clinicians choose the best treatment for individual patients. This will save lives and set the UK at the forefront of a growing global market in diagnostics worth $217bn in 2016.

Healthy Ageing The challenge is to develop new products and services that offer choice, meet their aspirations and through better, more effective care, support an independent lifestyle as they age. By working together, the government and industry can address the challenges of ageing whilst capturing a growing global market.

Transforming food production: from farm to fork The challenge is that our food needs to be much more efficient and sustainable. By using precision technologies we can make that a reality: transform food production while reducing emissions, pollution, waste, and soil erosion. By putting the UK at the forefront of this global revolution in farming, we will delivering benefits to farmers, the environment and consumers while driving growth, jobs and exports.

ISCF Wave 2 Challenges 10 challenges being progressed, 2 in Health and Life Science: Data to Early Diagnostics and Preventative Medicine - £210m Genomics – WGS of 500,000 UK Biobank Samples & 25,000 (x2) cancer patients Digital innovation Hubs – Industry access to clinical data – an NHS, HDR-UK & industry collaboration Digital Pathology, Digital Radiology & AI/Informatics – an NHS, industry, SME collaboration Healthy Ageing - £90m Three place-based development and demonstrators (PBDs). Collaborative Research & Development (CR&D) for the development of new products and services. Behavioural research to support business needs Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund A £75m R&D competition to identify 3 PBDs sought from existing centres of excellence with scientific depth of experience and facilities. PBDs would provide a focal point for user and customer engagement, open access for microbusinesses and SMEs and for new partners to come together. Providing financial support to microbusinesses, SMEs and academics to develop new products and services for older adults through £18m of private sector matched funding. It would build on digital healthcare and other funding focused on older adults. by informing product development, patterns of adoption and use and thereby reducing the risks in the environment within which businesses operate. Matched in kind a £5m contribution from partners

ISCF Wave 3 “We will run a third wave of Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund programmes, with UK Research and Innovation launching an expression of interest for potential challenges”
