Kennedy Serve America Act (2009) Six focus areas Emphasis on outcomes and evaluation 10% goal for engaging seniors in AmeriCorps With bipartisan Congressional support, CNCS has worked to focus service on pressing social problems; expand opportunities for more Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve; build the capacity of individuals, nonprofits, and communities; and embrace social innovation. The bipartisan Serve America Act set aggressive goals for AmeriCorps growth and strongly emphasized the role of evidence, evaluation, and outcomes. The goals that Congress laid out in the Serve America Act guide CNCS work every day and leads to our focus on impact, accountability, and evaluation.

AmeriCorps State and National 11/9/2018 AmeriCorps State and National Grants to organizations that recruit, train and place AmeriCorps members to meet critical community needs Focus on direct service activities 53% focused on education; serve in over 10,000 schools including 1 in 4 low achieving schools FY17: Grants for approximately 65,000 AmeriCorps members AmeriCorps State and National gives grants to organizations that focus on direct service to meet unmet community needs. Major grantees include Habitat for Humanity, Teach for America, City Year, and Public Allies. In addition, AmeriCorps members receive a post service education award that can be used for higher education or loan repayment. This year the amount is $5,920, which is tied to the Pell Grant amount. Of course, here are just a few examples: If there is a tornado, flood, forest fire, or hurricane, AmeriCorps members help communities recover from the damage caused by that disaster. To help people who are living in poverty have economic opportunity, AmeriCorps members build affordable housing units for families. For high school students who want to prepare for college and advance their education, AmeriCorps members create a mentorship program to connect students with community members. To promote environmental stewardship, AmeriCorps members remove trash and other man-made debris from local ponds. With an aim to reduce childhood obesity and promote healthy futures, AmeriCorps members have community members donate fresh produce to their local schools. AmeriCorps members assist veterans and military families in filing for benefits claims, so they get access to the resources they need.

11/9/2018 Our Grantees Asim: As the nation’s largest grantmaker for service and volunteering, CNCS plays a critical role in strengthening America’s nonprofit sector and addressing our nation’s challenges through service.  CNCS programs provide grants to some of the nation’s leading nonprofits, including familiar names like the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more.

Our Corporate Supporters 11/9/2018 Our Corporate Supporters o National service operates as a public private partnership. Most organizations who receive CNCS grants are required to obtain matching funds with non-CNCS resources, which often includes private sector and corporate entities. o Last year, CNCS programs levered more than $1.1 Billion in non-CNCS resources to strengthen community impact, build local support, and increase return on taxpayer dollars. o In addition, CNCS has found opportunities to sponsor with its corporate supporters in other ways. For example: o Time Warner, Southwest Airlines, and Shell also supported AmeriCorps response efforts in Hurricane Sandy-affected New York and New Jersey. o Google is financing an AmeriCorps program designed to help nonprofits effectively use technology to further their missions. o And Bank of America has enlisted AmeriCorps members to support financial literacy efforts.
