Types of Economic Systems Traditional System: sometimes referred to as communism Community looks to the past to answer the three questions of production and distribution. People will make what they have always made. People tend to do the same work their parents did and they distribute goods in the same way it has always been done.

Types of Economic Systems Mixed System: type of economic system found in most countries The government and private individuals share the responsibility of owning resources and deciding on production and distribution.

Types of Economic Systems Market System: sometimes referred to as capitalism Prices and profits determine what is made, how, and for whom. Businesses will make products and provide services that earn a profit, using whatever materials, labor, and technology can earn them the highest profit. People buy what they want and can afford.

The Connection The type of political system a country has greatly impacts the type of economic system a country will have. For example… Countries with democratic forms of government tend to have economies that lean more toward the market system. Countries with a communist and/or totalitarian form(s) of government tend to have economies that lean more toward the command system.

South Africa A government in which a few people such as a dominant clan or clique have power. Oligarchy What type of economic system exists in South Africa? What natural resources produces money in South Africa? Gold & Diamonds

Decline and End of Ottoman… By the 20th century, the Ottoman Empire was weak. The Ottomans sided with the losing side during World War I, which fought against the Allied powers of England, France, Russia, and the United States. After World War I ended the Ottoman Empire was crushed & it broke up…shortly after and the land was split between European nations. Soon after World War I ended Middle Eastern nations were formed in the land that was once known as the Ottoman Empire This created unfair boundaries & mixed ethnic groups who did not get along with each other.

Market Economy Private ownership of business & property Little gov’t regulation (the gov’t doesn’t determine what to make—instead the markets do. Freedom to make own choices Based on supply & demand Constantly changes to make better products More $ is offered for better products and workers

Command Economy A system based on central control of trade and production. A government decides what goods and services are given to its people. It may even limit what jobs people can hold. Egypt is moving away from a command economy and toward a market economy. However, the Egyptian government still has some control over financial decisions in the economy. Pure command economies are now found only in politically isolated countries such as Cuba and North Korea.

Religions Three major religions of the world developed or originated in Southwest Asia Judaism Christianity Islam All three religions are considered to be monotheistic Meaning you believe in only one god Each religion also has its own sacred text, or book, which stand at the center of their beliefs.

Types of Governments Israel- Israel has a parliamentary democracy. The head of the state (President) does not have much power- In fact much of the power lies in the hands of the Israeli legislature or the Knesset and their prime minister Iran-Currently has a theocratic republic. Government is based on religious principles and the wishes of its people- The head of the state or the supreme leader is known as the ayatollah

Literacy The literacy rates in Israel are higher than in other Southwest Asian countries. In all of these countries, more men tend to be able to read and write than women. This is especially true in Syria, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. Overall in some countries women’s education is not valued as much as men’s education. Furthermore, women receive a different education than men in some areas. Literacy has a large impact on a county’s development. For example, an increase in the literacy rate often leads to an increase in individual rights. Literacy rates also have an impact on a county’s economy.

ECOWAS Economic Communities of West African States (made up of former French colonies) Formed in 1975 as an Economic Alliance (like the European Union and NAFTA)
