I. Demographic Transition Model

Demographic Transition Model: the way a country’s demographics change as the country develops (economically) in 4 stages

Draw it in notes:

1. Stage 1: LOW GROWTH/Pre-Industrial VERY high birth and death rates with almost no long term natural increase Early humans: hunting/gathering Humans have a seasonal migration pattern – move with the heard Mongolian Nomads

2. Stage 2: HIGH GROWTH/Pre-Industrial Rapid decline in death + high birth rates = high natural increase Industrial Revolution lead to innovations in medicine and agriculture. Rural Living Economy dominated by agriculture

3. Stage 3: Decreasing Growth/Post-Industrial Birth rates rapidly decline, death rates decline, and natural increase begin to balance Urban/City living Small living space Less children per family

4. Stage 4: LOW GROWTH Very low birth and death rates = no natural increase and maybe even a decrease Zero Population Growth (ZPG): when CBR = CDR Shift toward service economy Women in the workforce Women have more education

5. HYPOTHETICAL STAGE 5 Population starts to decline, CDR > CBR, Negative NIR Pro-Natalist Policies: Laws and programs to encourage reproduction (ex. France) Anti-Natalist Policies: laws to discourage reproduction (China’s One Child Policy)

PRO NATALIST – policies that encourage natural population growth (Making babies)

Stage 2: Stage 3: Stage 4: Stage 5: Discuss: Come up with an example country for: Stage 1: Stage 2: Stage 3: Stage 4: Stage 5:

Discuss the Demographic Transition Model and its significance. Ticket Out the Door Discuss the Demographic Transition Model and its significance. Describe a country in stage 2 verses a country in stage 4. Use real examples.
