Science Fair

What is it?

Where do I get started? Instead of one long involved process, think of your science fair project as a series of shorter steps.

What is science fair all about? Thinking like a scientist!

Where do ideas come from Be Aware! – observe around you. Be curious. Be reasonable - narrow your topic Follow your interests Talk to people/teachers/professionals

Science Fair Choose a project based on… Your interests – favorite hobby, activity or career interest. Current events and publications – For example: concussions Interview someone in a profession of interest or a teacher in a subject that you enjoy. Watch Science Fiction – creativity is welcomed but it must be science based

Project Categories Biology and Agriculture Chemistry Physics and Math Earth and Environmental Science Engineering Robotics and Technology Aeronautics and Space Psychology

Biology Plant projects – vitamins and how they effect growth of plants Daphnia – effects or road salt/ caffeine

Chemistry Projects Experiment with natural ingredients to dye fabrics/eggs such as beets, berries, red cabbage…… Cooking! How does changing certain ingredients (baking soda, baking powder..effect cookie? Electrolysis – separating water into hydrogen and oxygen gas--- changed the concentrations of an acid

More Chemistry Projects Crystals Polymers – bouncy balls

Physics and Math Sports Explore the physics behind skateboard tricks. Why do golf balls have dimples…Does the number of dimples affect the distance it can fly? What is reaction time….Who has the quickest reaction time? Basketball bounce height – different gases Baseball projects

Physics and Math Electricity projects Parachute design Catapult design Which packing materials are the best when sending stuff in the mail?

Earth and Environmental Science Solar Ovens/Cars Recycling Projects

Psychology Does music help students concentrate on their homework? Influence of color/music/movies on blood pressure Memory

Engineering Which bridge is the strongest bridge? Aerodynamics: How does the shape of the car affect its motion? Blade Design for wind turbines

Medical Science Which liquids stain your teeth the most? The eggshell is a lot like your teeth. Which brand of teeth whiteners whitens teeth the best?
