Context (AO3) Romantic Literary heritage Contemporary Northern Ireland troubles (Belfast Confetti) ‘The Troubles’ was a conflict in Northern Ireland during the late 20th Century, which began during a campaign to end discrimination against the Catholic/nationalist minority by the Protestant/unionist government and police force. World War I (Exposure) 1914-18, the first war involving mass conscription. Over 16 million were killed and millions more injured in battle. Life in the trenches was harsh and soldiers were exposed to disease and the elements. Boer War (The Man He Killed) Fought by Britain and her Empire against the Boers. The Boers were comprised of the combined forces of the South African Republic and the Republic of the Orange Free State. The conflict lasted for 2 years and 8 months. Prejudice (Half Caste, No Problem, The Class Game) Although on the decline, racism and class discrimination are prevalent problems and are documented in some of the poems. Crimean War (Charge of the Light Brigade) The Crimean War was a military conflict fought between October 1853 – March 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, the Great Britain with Ireland, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. Romanticism (A Poison Tree, The Prelude) A literary classification which labels certain writers and writings of the later eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Romantics celebrated emotion, wildness and nature above reason, logic and science, and believed in individualism. Chronicles (Bible story, Sennacherib) In this story King Sennacherib of Assyria attempts to attack the Holy city of Jerusalem. Hezekiah, the king of Jerusalem, prays to heaven for help. The Lord sends an angel that kills all the Assyrian soldiers. Victorian society (Cousin Kate) Known for being prudish and elitist, the Victorians were harsh on so called ‘fallen women’. Vietnam War (What Were They Like) The Vietnam War was the struggle between the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies and the U.S. attempting to prevent the spread of communism.
