Aquatic Ecosystems 5.L.2.1 I can compare the characteristics of several common ecosystems, including estuaries and salt marshes, oceans, lakes and ponds, forests, and grasslands.
Aquatic Ecosystems Aquatic Ecosystems may be fresh water (lakes and ponds) or saltwater (oceans, estuaries, and saltwater marshes ocean lake estuary pond Saltwater marsh
Lakes & Ponds Large (lakes) and small (ponds) bodies of fresh water surrounded by land Ponds shallower, stays same temp from top to bottom
Lakes & Ponds Plants and algae grow around edges where water is shallow Snails, frogs, turtles, ducks, beavers, fish, catfish, bass & trout
Oceans Large bodies of saltwater divided by continents. Oceans have many types of ecosystems depending on conditions (sunlight, temperature, depth, salinity. Most organisms live where the ocean is shallow. (from the shoreline to the continental shelf)
Oceans Some organisms that live in the shallow ocean are drifters (jellyfish or seaweed), swimmers (fish), crawlers (crabs), and those anchored to the floor (corals) In deep water, plankton float on top. Others are whales, turtles, sharks, fish, octopus
Estuary Where fresh water from a river meets and mixes with salt water from the ocean High tide – salt water flows in Low tide – salt water flows out
Estuary Organisms must be adapted to live in different amounts of salt throughout the day Shrimp, crabs, oysters
Salt Marsh A salt marsh is a type of estuary that act like an enormous filter, removing pollutants such as herbicides, pesticides, and heavy metals out of the water flowing through it.
