POSITIVE LEARNING HABITS Pep Talk

. Learning Habits/Skills Listening strategies. Concentration strategies. Memory strategies. Note-taking strategies. Reading comprehension strategies. Writing strategies.

Listening Strategies Stop talking. Practice active listening.Example Focus on teacher. Repeat messages back to the teacher to determine understanding.

Concentration Strategies Avoid distraction/keep a single focus. Concentrate on the present task. Study in a quiet relaxing environment. Take breaks as needed/avoid over-studying.  

Memory strategies Employ listening and concentration skills. Repeat verbally or in writing. Associate material something familiar (analogies). Employ mnemonic devices. Use the first letters of the material/list to make a silly sentence/story. Example Create an acronym.

Note-taking strategies Listen carefully. Write well. Follow the leader. Copy from the board. Record repeated phrases. Record topics of emphasis (teacher’s voice tone, repeating of ideas/phrases, pace). Organize your notes. Outline Diagrams Use “Cornell Notes” form Compare notes. Review notes within 48 hours.

Reading Comprehension Strategies Scan the chapter. Use the TEACH format. Think: What will this chapter be about? What do I need to learn from this chapter? Explain: Decide what you already know about the chapter. Ask: Who?, What?, Where?, When?, Why? Clues: Title, Key words, Headings, Illustrations Handwrite chapter highlights: Definitions, Formulas, and Main Concepts. More.... Write the 6 strategies from the video.

Writing Strategies 1). Write legibly. 2).Remember the 3 C’s: Clear, Concise, and Convincing. 3). Write simply in an understandable format. 4). Proofread your work. 5) Proof-Speak.

General Test Preparation Strategies 1.) Stay healthy and well-rested. 2) Avoid over-studying. 3). Develop a plan of action. Test Taking Tips Vid. Write out all 9 tips for submitting to teacher...

Test Taking Strategies 1.) Relax during test administration. 2.) Glance over the test; number of questions, format, points per question/section, etc. 3.) Read instructions completely, then: a.) Answer the easiest questions first. b.) Eliminate answers. c.) Go with your first guess. d.) Check answers before turning the test in.

Effective habits 1.) Keep a course notebook. 2.) Clearly understand the assignment and follow instructions. 3.) Keep assignments up to date. 4.) Schedule a time and place to study. 5.) Don’t procrastinate. 6.) Study in short segments instead of “cramming”. 7.) Complete hard assignments first. 8.) Participate in class activities/discussions.
