Travel Tip #2 Travel Consultation The consultation is FREE but there is a charge for any vaccines Bring your immunization records- Wisconsin immunization records can be found at www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/immunization/wir.htm Bring a list of all your medications Have your itinerary ready Expect to create a travel health plan specific to your individual needs
Traveling with Medications Travel Tip #3 Traveling with Medications Carry a complete list of all medications (use generic names) Pack all prescription or over-the-counter medications in their original bottles Have medications packed in carry-on luggage Make sure to bring enough plus extra to allow for any change in travel plans Talk to your pharmacist or insurance provider if more than a 30 day supply is needed Check the country embassy for a list of illegal medications
Travel Tip #4 Traveling with a Health Concern Carry a letter from your medical provider (on their office letterhead with contact information). It should include a summary of any health condition, medications, and a plan of care Carry or wear a medical alert, listing allergies or health conditions Carry a card in the local language with medical information, serious allergies, health conditions, and list of the generic names for all medications Joint Commission accredited medical facilities can be found at www.jointcommissioninternational.org
Insect Bite Prevention Travel Tip #5 Insect Bite Prevention Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeves, long pants, and hats Avoid areas and times of day when mosquitoes are most active Use an insect repellent that contains at least a 20-50% DEET When using a sunscreen apply it first, allow it to dry, then apply insect repellent Stay or sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms Use a bed net if sleeping exposed to outdoors Permethrin can be used to treat clothing and gear-but DO NOT apply directly to skin
Travel Tip #6 Safe Food and Water Hot foods should be eaten hot and cold foods should be eaten cold Eat pasteurized dairy products Avoid raw or undercooked eggs, meat, fish, or seafood Eat fruits and vegetables washed in clean water or peeled yourself Avoid eating food from street vendors Drink bottled water or beverages with an intact seal Hot coffee and tea are considered safe Ice is not considered safe unless made from bottled or disinfected water
