Subordinating Conjunctions Using AAAWWUBBIS to link dependent and independent clauses into complex sentences

Wait... what's an independent clause again? A group of words that contains a noun and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Can stand alone as a sentence. You can link two independent clauses together using a comma + coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS)   I love English class, so I'm excited to come every day.

Then what's a dependent clause? A group of words that contains a subject and a verb but does NOT express a complete thought. Cannot stand alone as a sentence - must be linked with an independent clause. Begins with a subordinating conjunction.   Can I have an example please!?!?!

Sure. When I get to school in the morning, I am ready to learn. Although I am surrounded by my peers, I stay focused all day.   After school is over, I hurry home to do my homework and study. The clauses in yellow are dependent clauses. They have a noun and a verb, but don't express a complete thought.

Subordinating conjunctions in dependent clauses Dependent clauses often start with a subordinating conjunction.   Before I can allow you to leave, I must get my paper back. Until I get my paper back, you can't leave the room. Before and until are subordinating conjunctions. There are lots of subordinating conjunctions, but we're going to look at 10...

AAAWWUBBIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A = Although A = After A = As You can remember 10 common subordinating conjunctions by thinking of AAAWWUBBIS. A = Although A = After A = As W = While W = When U = Until B = Because B = Before I = If S = Since

Wait. What's an AAAWWUBBIS!?!?!?!? Good question. I don't know. It's one of life's many mysteries.

So how do I use subordinating conjunctions and dependent clauses? (Subordinating conjunction + noun + predicate) + comma + independent clause = complex sentence   While most people like pepperoni on their pizza, I prefer spinach and onion.

Let's practice! Write a concise paragraph (approximately 150 words) about your morning routine. Include at least four complex sentences using four DIFFERENT subordinating conjunctions and at least one compound sentence using a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS). Underline your conjunctions! This due at the end of the hour, so use your time productively!
