Author’s Purpose Reading Skill Review

Author’s Purpose The reason an author decides to write about a specific subject Three Major categories: Inform Persuade Entertain

Inform To provide information to the reader and give knowledge of a subject

Persuade To move the reader to think in a certain way or follow a belief

Entertain To provide amusement or enjoyment to the reader

What’s the Purpose? You may have encountered instances when you could have bet your life about something you had seen or done, but yet when you revisited, either the thing has vanished or the chore, left undone. If you happen to visit Ireland you may encounter the same feeling at the Loughareema Lake. Visitors of loughareema lake start to feel as if they’ve been there before.

INFORM What’s the Purpose? Facts and opinions If a passage has more facts than opinions, it is more than likely an informative passage. If a passage has more opinions than facts, the passage will either be a persuasive or entertaining one

Which is fact? Opinion? That skunk had the most disgusting odor I had ever smelled. Skunks are mammals best known for their ability to secrete a liquid with a strong, foul odor. His article in the newspaper was completely false and did not contain a single fact. The family lived in a home that was as big as a castle and more beautiful than a fairy tale.
