Distance Education & Growth at FCC: Collaboration for Student Success Using the OEI Ecosystem Presented by Dr. Jodie Steeley Director of Distance Education and Educational Technology Fresno City College

Definitions (ACCJC Guide, 2017) Distance Education: “…a formal interaction which uses one or more technologies to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and which supports regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor, either synchronously or asynchronously.” Correspondence Education: “Interaction between the instructor and student is limited, is not regular and substantive, and is primarily initiated by the student.”

Distance Education Growth Enrollment (California State-Wide) Percent of total headcount that are DE increased 11% 24% 35% NOTABLE MILESTONE: As of 2014-15, Hispanics have outnumbered Whites in distance education enrollments.

FCC DE Success: 2 Years of Change Distance* Face to Face Fall Sections Enrollment Success Retention GPA 2011 77 1,859 63.60% 85.10% 2.40 68.80% 90.30% 2012 88 2,358 63.80% 84.70% 2.44 68.40% 90.40% 2.37 2013 90 2,580 61.40% 85.90% 2.29 68.50% 91.00% 2.38 2014 96 2,670 59.60% 84.10% 2.27 69.50% 91.10% 2.35 2015 153 4,614 86.40% 68.70% 90.90% 2.34 2016 210 6,419 65.90% 88.30% 70.30% 91.50% 2.47 Growth 240% Success As you can see we have almost tripled the number of sections offered via DE. When compared to FCC total, online classes had lower success rate and lower retention rate (about 5-6%) which is in line with the state average. However GPA of online classes was comparable to FCC overall. I believe we can address these gaps in success and retention with both professional development and additional student support, and the Office of Instruction is committed to closing these gaps. 10% Gap 4% Gap * 100% and Hybrid
