Activity type: Design and make Guzzler would like a greenhouse but he has no money to buy one. He decides to make his own greenhouse but is confused at how many different kinds of greenhouses are available.

Exploring: Show the children pictures of various types of greenhouses. Hold a class discussion on the structure and functions of a greenhouse. Questions to promote discussion What do you see in this picture? Do you know what it is? What is it used for? What is this greenhouse made from? How do you think the sun gets into this greenhouse? Do you think Guzzler likes this greenhouse? If Guzzler makes a greenhouse will it be like this one? Why not? Why do you think gardeners plant things in greenhouses? How do you think greenhouses help plants to grow?

Questions to promote discussion What do you see in this picture? Do you know what it is? What is it used for? What is this greenhouse made from? How do you think the sun gets into this greenhouse? How is this greenhouse different from the previous picture? Do you think Guzzler likes this greenhouse? Why?

Questions to promote discussion What do you see in this picture? Do you know what it is? What is it used for? Is this a type of greenhouse? How is it similar to the last greenhouse? How is it different to the last greenhouse? How do you think the sun gets into this 'greenhouse'? Why do you think Guzzler really likes this greenhouse?

Questions to promote discussion What do you see in this picture? Do you know what it is? What is it used for? Is this a type of greenhouse? How is it similar to the last picture? How is it different to the last picture? How do you think the sun gets into this 'greenhouse'? Do you think Guzzler likes this greenhouse? Why?

Building a greenhouse Tell the children that they are going to design and make their own small greenhouses. Show the children the materials that are available to them and discuss the criteria that their designs must meet. Some suggestions for criteria: It must be made from recyclable materials. It must be at least 30cm in height. It must be able to stand by itself. Whole class discussion on items you might need to build your own greenhouse.

Questions for discussion: After the whole class discussion on materials and criteria, the children work in small groups. They discuss their designs and make detailed drawings of them. They then make their greenhouses Following class creation of greenhouses, each group evaluates its design. Use the questions to aid class discussion when evaluating.
